Why Gamification Fails and How to Fix It

Good video games succeed by being well-designed, pleasure-producing experiences. Gamification seeks to capture the addiction-forming techniques of games while often skipping the elements that make gameplay intrinsically enjoyable. Without a foundation of solid game design and engaging experiences, gamification is destined to fail. As we examine why gamification falls short, the solution becomes clear - it must focus first on creating satisfying user experiences.

There are a few potential reasons why gamification initiatives often fail:

  1. Lack of meaningful purpose - Gamification is sometimes implemented without a clear understanding of the real-world goals and outcomes. Without purpose, gamification feels meaningless.
  2. Poor integration with experience - When gamification feels separate or tacked on rather than seamlessly integrated, it falls flat.
  3. Over-reliance on extrinsic motivation - Extrinsic rewards like points and badges only motivate to a certain extent. Gamification needs intrinsic motivation through satisfying experiences.
  4. Lack of player autonomy - Gamification should provide a sense of autonomy through meaningful choices. Feeling forced to participate diminishes engagement.
  5. Badge fatigue - An overemphasis on badges, points, and leaderboards can fatigue users over time, leading to disengagement.
  6. Lack of progress visibility - Gamification needs clear progress tracking and visibility. Users disengage when they can't see growth.
  7. Behavior contradictions - Some gamification incentivizes undesirable real-world behaviors that contradict the intended behaviors.
  8. Lack of quality game design - Applying game elements without game design skills results in poor experiences. Quality game design is crucial.
  9. Focusing on existing behaviors - Gamification works best when focused on developing new behaviors, not rewarding existing behaviors.
  10. Lack of ongoing iteration - Like games, gamification needs constant playtesting and iteration to refine the experience.

It's essential to recognize that good video games are more than just software or apps. While games are built on code, the high-level goal is to deliver engaging and enjoyable player experiences - things that can't be precisely specified and quantified like traditional software requirements. This intrinsic focus on creating "fun" is why many competent software developers still struggle to design truly compelling games. Game design requires creatives, artists, and designers just as much as engineers and coders. You cannot simply outsource enjoyable gameplay based on a list of app features. The very nature of games as pleasure-driven experiences makes quality game design a nuanced craft unto itself.

In summary, for gamification to succeed, it needs purposeful and ethical design focused on driving intrinsic motivation through engaging experiences that make real-world behaviors more satisfying and enjoyable. When done right, gamification can meaningfully impact behaviors, but it requires care, iteration and quality game design skills.

Those are some very insightful points, particularly your first one which I wholeheartedly echo:?it’s essential to put the real-world goal at the core of a gamified program (rather than fun for its own sake). I keep seeing this particular pitfall undermine many training programs that would otherwise be highly successful, engaging and effective. Thanks for sharing! :)

good stuff, shared w/ team as we seek to "gameify" aspects of our ecosystem beyond the core game itself.
