Why Freshers Are Failing: The Copy Paste Trap

Freshers and even those with 2-3 years of experience are making a critical mistake, they depend too much on AI tools like ChatGPT. Instead of learning by writing code, they copy paste without understanding and thinking they are saving time.
The Difference Between Seniors and Today’s AI Generation
Seniors wrote the same code thousands of times because they had no AI to rely on. They debugged, struggled, and truly learned. Freshers, on the other hand, skip the struggle. They rely on AI-generated code, but when asked to write from scratch, they freeze.
Real Interview Experience
I interviewed a candidate who had four projects listed on their resume. When I asked: "How do you apply explicit wait on an element?"
They couldn’t write a single line. No logic, no attempt. It was clear, they had copied their way through projects but never actually coded
AI is a Tool, Not a Shortcut
Seniors use AI to assist their learning. Freshers use it to replace learning. That’s the difference.
If you're a fresher, ask yourself
If not, it’s time to change your approach. Struggle, practice, and actually learn because copy-pasting won’t take you far.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS WRITE CODE IN YOUR EARLY YEARS, THAT IS ONE THING I LEARNT.
Seniors, what’s your take? Have you seen this in your team? How do you handle it? What advice do you want to give to your juniors?

1 个月I agree with Japneet Sachdeva there always are pros and cons of a technology. I feel technology is a double-edged sword, and freshers need to understand that AI is a tool, not a shortcut. Looking back, my growth mindset was shaped by the nurturing and buddy culture at my first company, Axioned. That foundation set the tone for a decade-long learning journey, which continues today. Freshers can’t be blamed for using AI it’s available to them, just as new technologies will continue to emerge. The key isn’t to resist AI but to guide them in using it the right way. Instead of just warning them, we should build processes and share our own experiences to help them adapt effectively. How we do this is a much larger discussion, but let’s remember the guidance we received early in our careers and take ownership in paying it forward.

1 个月Well Said. Getting the help from GPT is allowed. But one needs to understand analyse what GPT is producing.
