Why Focusing on Just Colors + Fashion is Missing the Point of Personal Branding

Why Focusing on Just Colors + Fashion is Missing the Point of Personal Branding

In today’s digital economy, personal branding is no longer a “might need” but a MUST in the world of entrepreneurship and career development.

?But all too often, the conversation around personal branding focuses on superficial elements like colors and fashion, rather than on the more important aspects of building a strong personal brand “DNA”. This downplaying of personal branding is not only misguided but can actually be harmful to your success.

So what more is there to consider….(in case you missed my instagram reel…)

At its core, personal branding is about storytelling. It's about creating a narrative that communicates who you are, what you stand for, and what makes you unique. While colors and fashion may play a role in this narrative, they are not the most important elements. The story you tell about yourself, your values, and your experiences is what will resonate with your audience and help you stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Focusing on colors and fashion can also lead to the danger of stereotyping. When you rely too heavily on superficial elements to communicate your personal brand, you risk being pigeonholed into a certain image or stereotype. For example, if you always wear a certain color or style of clothing, people may assume that you are a certain type of person, regardless of who you actually are. This can limit your opportunities and prevent you from connecting with people who may be interested in what you have to offer.

Finally, authenticity is one of the most important elements of personal branding. When you focus too much on colors and fashion, you may be sacrificing authenticity for the sake of image. This can be harmful to your personal brand, as people can often sense when someone is not being genuine. It's far better to be true to yourself and your values than to try to fit into a certain image or stereotype.

That’s why building a strong brand strategy comes before anything else. It’s like the cake (brand architecture) under the frosting (fashion + colors). We need both to be good.
