Why Focusing On Behaviours Is The Key To Achieving Your Goals

Defining and understanding our behaviours can be the initial step in achieving our goals, but I’d like to challenge you to focus on why these behaviours are important rather than just doing them for the sake of it.

When it comes to setting and achieving goals, it's all about the behaviours.

It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that if you just get your thoughts and emotions in line, everything else will fall into place. But the truth is: Behaviours are what get you there, not thoughts or emotions.

I've worked with many salespeople over my career, and I can tell you that they're almost always focused on the wrong thing—their thinking and emotions instead of their behaviours.

The solution? Focus on the behaviours that will help you reach your goals.

If you want to make a change, it's only possible by changing your behaviours first. And yes, this means that if you're struggling with something like cold calling or prospecting (like most salespeople), then you need to start doing more of it! It's no good thinking about how much it sucks or how much you hate doing it until you've done some work on the front end - in this case by actually making those calls.

And remember: Behaviours don't always come naturally - but they do come with practice. When it comes down to it, the best way to achieve any goal is through specific and measurable behaviours.

The challenge for most salespeople is their behaviours are for the most part unconscious, which means you don't know you're doing it—you only see the reaction. You don't see what created that reaction.

That's a problem if you want to improve your sales skills, because in order to improve your sales tactics, you have to know what they are.

Has this ever happened to you? You're taking action towards your goals and it's going well, but suddenly you stop. You can't figure out why you're not taking any action anymore. You seem to have lost all motivation.

Why does that change happen in a heartbeat? And why does it take so long for your attitude to get back on track?

There are 4 behaviours to pay attention to that need to be in alignment if we want to move forward towards our goals.

Behaviour 1: What we think about ourselves and others; how we talk about them.

Behaviour 2: What we say about ourselves and others; how we write about them.

Behaviour 3: How we feel about ourselves and others; how our body language moves when interacting with them.

Behaviour 4: How we act towards ourselves and others; how our actions are driven by the thoughts in our minds.

The key to change is within these 4 behaviours, not in one particular action or decision. It’s about making sure that everything is aligned so that you feel comfortable moving forward with your goals

If you're struggling to achieve a goal and don't know where to begin, ask yourself what behaviours might be holding you back. Then, whether it's fake it 'til you make it, or working hard from the comfort of your own home, find a way to start doing those things. One way or another, getting into the right frame of mind is going to be the key to achieving the goals that really matter to you.

This is where self-awareness really comes into play. Our behavior directly impacts our goals and whether we achieve them. This a reminder for us all to self-reflect and see if we have behaviors that are no longer serving us.

It is such a good idea to take a step back every now and try to look at the way we are operating from a distance - such a helpful thing to do.
