Why Is Flexibility Important?

Are you unflappable in the face of a crisis, or do you panic

I have worked in two schools where students have LITERALLY set the school on fire! (thankfully they were contained early, so not much damage was done). Hopefully, you haven’t had to navigate literal fires, but I am sure as a leader you have had to navigate metaphorical ones.


If you’re the first on the scene, and calm in a crisis you might have good flexibility in your thinking skills. If you tend to panic, you might struggle. You may find it difficult to shift the plan you created in your head of how a conversation, meeting, or process should go. So what happens when this occurs?

You tend to dig in more and get more attached, unable to flex and take a different perspective. You become less able to hold space for other ideas or opinions. We have all heard the stories of leaders who were 'my way or the highway'. This inflexibility suggests that FLEXIBILITY in executive functioning repertoire was not their strength.


Flexible thinking leaders can quickly adjust to new situations, pivot as required making them more effective in a crisis. By being open to new ideas, they foster an environment of creativity and innovation. This flexibility also helps teams become more resilient, as they can adapt to changes and challenges more effectively. Additionally, flexible leaders are better at understanding and incorporating different perspectives, which fosters psychological safety, improves relationships and builds stronger, more collaborative teams.
