Why the Financial Times are saying 'travel experts are in demand'

Did you get your fingers burnt?

Remember when travel writers recommended DIY booking sites?

'Go online, choose your flight and hotel, pay your money and sit back,' they said.

It was well meaning, but short-sighted.

And it worked for a while.

People enjoyed playing travel agent, though few would suggest their own job could be done without training.

It sounded simple. Until it went wrong. Suddenly Covid arrived, the world ground to a standstill and there was nobody to help.

'Welcome to Portugal. Please proceed to gate 3 where your flight home is ready for take off...'

Online travel companies shut up shop. Some disappeared for good. Airlines didn't want to talk to you. Their phones were permanently engaged. Overseas hotels sent their accounts staff home to avoid making payments.

Millions of pounds were lost as frustrated travellers gave up trying to get refunds after hanging on for hours. Many people got their fingers burnt.

?But, our customers had a smug look...

?

They had specialists looking after them who understood how to manipulate complex airline reservation systems, call in favours to get airlines to return money. And pull strings with hotels.

None of them did it from the goodness of their hearts. But for solid commercial reasons. They knew they'd need us in the future.

It took a pandemic for people to appreciate the value a travel expert can bring.??

Last week the Financial Times explained why customers are turning to travel specialists for expert advice and guidance.

?They said: 'Over the past two decades, advances in technology have made it increasingly easy to book your own flights, hotels, car rental and tours online.

'And then came the pandemic and a raft of ever-changing travel restrictions, testing requirements and last-minute cancellations.

'Travel is more complicated than it has been in a generation and so the helping hand of an expert travel manager is suddenly at a premium once more.'

?The Sunday Times also described this shift away from DIY bookings as: 'The great travel agent revival.'

I remember being sat at my kitchen table during the first lockdown, 6 coffee's deep, desperately trying to figure out how to fly a corporate client from Port Harcourt, Nigeria, to Bintulu, Malaysia.? In the span of 24 hours, the two options we thought we had were cancelled by the airlines. In addition to this, the COVID travel requirements had already changed.? It crossed my mind that this gentleman could be away from his home for a very long time.? Fortunately, the team & I eventually cracked the hypothetical enigma code... If memory serves me right, his return flight home took him about 42 hours, involving 5 different flights.?Having spent hours on this, I can assure you, it was the only way... Nightmare!? It feels amazing to be out the other side of it - dare I say, we're all much better at our jobs as a result (I love a silver lining) ??
