Why Adapt Your Script To A Book? Why are studios showing interest in multi-platform packages? How will this package help get my script produced?

Why studios are interested (multi-platform package): Film and streaming studios recognize the benefits of having the rights to both your script and book version of your script (adaptation of your script to a book). More details below.

With a script and book version of your script, you have 2 ways to bring attention to your script.

  • Submit your script and book version of your script to film, streaming, and broadcast companies.
  • Market the book version direct to a public global audience.

Note: It's not as difficult as you may think to have a book version of your script. Technology and the publishing industry have made it easier and faster than ever to have a book version of your script.

Note: For writers that are also published authors. They know, not all scripts become box office hits and not all books become best-sellers or have high sales numbers.

  • Writers/Authors also know. However long it takes someone to produce your script. Authors decide when their manuscript gets published and remain available to a public global audience!

Why film and streaming studios have a strong interest in multi-platform packages

  • What is a multi-platform package? It is a package that includes both your script and book (book version of your book).

There are at a minimum two divisions within film, streaming, and broadcast companies your project has to appeal to:

1. The creative side that approves the script for their executive committee to review.

Your script has a quicker path to production: The script is formatted and written as the foundation and blueprint to produce a media visual that can be developed, funded, and created for immediate theatrical and/or broadcast release. ?

  • Book (Book version of your script): Due to how books are written, it serves as the foundation and outline for new films, sequels, or as a series.
  • Including, all new content will be based on the concept, storyline, and individual characters that are already outlined, developed and defined, in the book version of the script.
  • This is why sequels and spin-offs to your original script is easier to write and produce in a shorter amount of time.

It is primarily for these reasons that studios have a heighten interest in multi-platform packages. If the genre, concept, and creative storyline of your script meets their needs.

1a. The business side that pays for it.

Why the business side of studios have a heightened interest in multi-platform packages (packages that include a script and book).

  • From the business side of any company: If they like the concept, genre, and ties talent to the project that meets their budget, and marketing research shows potential for a profit. They will pay for it.
  • They then can negotiate a package deal upfront for both the script and book. This prevents other companies from having access to create, produce, or publish anything from the concept and characters found in the book or script.
  • Basically, they buy the rights to the script and book from you. Don't be afraid. Typically, the book version adds more value to the deal.

Where are the numbers/sources to back this up? Genuine question, as we're just in post on a film and we've written the book to go alongside it. I'd love to see the data and/or articles so we can send this to our sales agents. Thank you!
