Why Family Based Treatment? (Virtual Resource for Parents)

Why are we so passionate at Partners in Wellness about Family Based Treatment for kids and teens with eating disorders?

  • Because we would never want to leave a child alone with such a vicious, potentially life-threatening illness. Intervening is the most loving thing parents can do.
  • Because it is evidence-based treatment and the gold standard of care for child and adolescent eating disorders. Why would we start with anything less?
  • Because parents need help to understand the illness and skills to effectively intervene. It is the job of a FBT therapist to join with parents to create a plan that works for their family.
  • Because FBT helps keep kids out of the hospital or from admitting or returning to a higher level of care. We want kids home with their families as much as possible.
  • Because full recovery is possible, and early intervention makes a big difference.
  • Because parents are capable and responsible for the health and well-being of their children, including intervening even when the child says they don't want the help.
  • Because... it works.

You don't have to take it from us. Here is the true essence of Family Based Treatment, spoken by someone who recovered through this model.

"Just as my parents did, you have to want their recovery before they can want it for themselves, you have to choose their recovery for them, before they can choose it for themselves, and you have to be their motivation before they find their own."

Interested in learning more? Our next virtual caregiver workshop is coming up on November 15 & 16th. It is an excellent way to learn about eating disorders, parents' role in recovery, and practical strategies to use immediately to help restore your child or teen to health.
