Why exercising MORE won't be effective for you

Why exercising MORE won't be effective for you

Before we get into it, if you are currently not exercising at all, and live a very sedentary life… You DO need to workout more.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news ??

?? Today I am talking to the people who exercise a little bit (perhaps inconsistently) or even quite regularly, but aren’t seeing the results they wish to see and are now asking themselves:

Should I be working out more?

I work with people who ask me this all the time….

They tell me they’ve tried working out in the past, with little to no success. And they really want to see results, so they are wondering if they should workout for more than an hour a day. Or go from exercising 4 days a week to 6 days.

Are there some cases where you need to workout more?

Yes.

However, that's usually only true if you are being really inconsistent with your current, super strategic routine.

And even if that's the case... not everyone should aim to workout more hours!

If you fall into one of these categories and are wondering if you need to workout more… here's why you should NOT:

? You’re going through menopause or have hormonal imbalances

People say that as you age, you need to workout a lot harder to see results. To that I say, you actually just need to work smarter.

Over-exercising makes hormonal imbalances worse. If you are frustrated that your declining estrogen is making you lose muscle and put on fat, swap your cardio for some functional strength workouts. DO NOT add another hour of cardio to your week... that will throw your hormones off even more. (Which will make it even harder for you to lose weight)

? You should be working out regularly if you have hormonal imbalances, but you need to be wary about how much.

? You have anxiety

You've been going through some life lately, put on some weight and now you are wondering if you should hit the ground running and amp up your workout routine to lose those new inches...

DON'T!

Over-exercising will make your nervous system feel more overwhelmed, and you're anxiety will get worse. If you workout too much, you will either live with horrible anxiety or quit exercising all together because it triggers you.

? You should be working out regularly if you have anxiety, but you need to be wary about how much.

These are just two super specific examples of groups of people who shouldn't over-exercise.

However, NO ONE should jump straight to working out more hours until they've exhausted their other solutions.

If you are working out and not seeing results, it's actually more likely due to the fact that you need a different workout routine. So instead of asking what can I do MORE of, ask yourself if your routine is really the right match for you needs?

If you don't know the answer to that question, that's why fitness coaches exist! I would love to help you sort that out!

?? Tell me in the comments... have you ever experienced the negative side effects of over-training? (I have, I'll share my story in the comments too)
