Why exercise & outdoor play is important for your dog's health

Some pet parents often see different behaviors in their pets like constant barking, chewing household stuff, playing rough, jumping or pushing over furniture, raiding garbage cans, stealing food and so on. Assuming that we have a naughty pet, parents often try putting a stop to this behavior either by cajoling or by angry instructions.

Pets are like kids who are high on energy. In order to make them behave well we need to channelize their energy through exercise and outdoor play time. Physical activity like food plays a very important role in the behavior, activeness and health of the dogs. It acts as a win- win deal for the dog and owner both. The benefits of exercise and outdoor play are plenty, some of them are:

1. Fit Body

Only eating makes the dogs overweight which causes lethargy, respiratory problems, intolerance for exercise and lack of mobility. Regular play and exercise help them get fit and overcome obesity related diseases.

2. Physical & Mental Wellness

If left alone dogs feel lonely and often face mental illness like stress, depression, aggressiveness, anxiety and so on. Playing with them, and getting them socialized prevents such mental illness. It also keeps them free from physical diseases.?

3. Prevent Behavioral issues?

When the dog’s energy is channelized through games and exercise, they are calm in mind and body. Along with a stable mind, socializing helps the dogs feel comfortable and prevents behavioral problems.

4. Strengthens Bonding

Playing helps the parent understand the needs and behavior of the pets. It makes them feel secure and also strengthens the bond between the pet and the parent as communication between the two improves.

5. Helps be Happy

Having a sound mind and health along with being cared for and loved makes the pet feel secure and happy.

While playing, we should make sure we do not get ourselves or the dogs aggressive. The type of play or exercise requirement depends on the energy levels of the dogs, they should not be forced. Also, it is not mandatory to be fit or keep running around to get the dog healthier, games where you can stand/ sit in a place while the dogs run around can also be played.

You can play games like fetch, stay, hide & seek, drop/ give, treat search and so on. If you are a socializing pet parent you can also take your dog to the park to play with other dogs.

Channelizing the dog’s energy through walks, games and exercise also benefits the owner in terms of health. If you have a busy schedule and want to keep your dog active or occupied in your absence you can use pet care service apps like cuddly tails that are just a click away.
