Why Everyone Should Work In the Restaurant Industry at Some Point in Their Career

As my background cumulates over 20 years working in restaurants, it taught me many aspects in my career, including how to talk to individuals when it comes to financial wellness benefits in my current role with Corporate America Family Credit Union ( CAFCU ). The restaurant industry is a vibrant and bustling world that offers unique opportunities for personal and professional growth. While many individuals may not initially consider working in this field, I firmly believe that everyone should experience the restaurant industry at some point in their career. From honing essential life skills to gaining invaluable insights into human nature, the restaurant industry provides an unparalleled learning ground. In this opinion piece, I will make the case for why embracing the restaurant industry can be a transformative and enriching experience for individuals from all walks of life.

Developing Strong Work Ethic

Working in the restaurant industry demands dedication, perseverance, and a strong work ethic. The fast-paced nature of the industry teaches employees the value of efficiency and time management. Whether you are a server, cook, or manager, the restaurant environment fosters a culture of hard work and discipline that can be applied to any future career path.

Building Exceptional Communication Skills

Effective communication is the backbone of success in any field, and the restaurant industry offers a masterclass in honing this skill. Interacting with diverse customers, collaborating with colleagues in high-pressure situations, and resolving conflicts are daily occurrences. Employees quickly learn to adapt their communication style to cater to different personalities and situations, invaluable skills that translate to success in any professional setting.

Cultivating Empathy and Emotional Intelligence

Serving customers from all walks of life exposes restaurant industry employees to a myriad of experiences and emotions. Developing empathy and emotional intelligence is a natural consequence of interacting with people in various moods and circumstances. Understanding the needs and emotions of others fosters a more compassionate and supportive work environment, vital attributes in any workplace.

Gaining Multitasking and Problem-Solving Abilities

Restaurant workers are adept at juggling multiple tasks simultaneously. From taking orders to managing reservations and handling customer inquiries, the restaurant industry teaches invaluable multitasking skills. Additionally, encountering unforeseen challenges and resolving them on the spot enhances problem-solving abilities and adaptability, valuable traits in any professional setting.

Appreciating the Value of Teamwork

The restaurant industry thrives on teamwork. From the kitchen staff working in harmony to deliver perfect dishes to servers collaborating seamlessly to provide exceptional service, teamwork is at the core of success. Understanding the power of collaboration and synergy is a lesson that stays with individuals throughout their careers, encouraging a collaborative approach to problem-solving and project execution.

Fostering Resilience and Grace under Pressure

In a fast-paced and often stressful environment, restaurant employees quickly learn to remain composed and gracious under pressure. Dealing with challenging customers or handling unexpected situations instills resilience, an invaluable quality that can be applied in high-stress professional settings.

Either permanently or gaining the skills to get back on track to a new opportunity whether a layoff took place, or some reasoning, by immersing themselves in the diverse and dynamic world of restaurants, individuals gain a deeper appreciation for the value of hard work, teamwork, and adaptability. As a result, I firmly believe that working in the restaurant industry is a transformative experience that equips individuals with invaluable tools for success, making it an indispensable part of every career journey.

I attribute many skills I've honed in the communication field to my over 16 years in the restaurant industry, including multitasking, performing under pressure, deadline orientation, and attention to detail (to name a few). While I don't think it's a path for everyone, we can't grow from a state of comfort. The restaurant industry might be a valuable avenue for someone struggling with (but wanting to enhance) their people skills, empathy, or maintaining professionalism under duress. Thankfully, I've seen the industry begin to shift toward better pay, working conditions, benefits, etc., and the public starting to realize that restaurant work can and should accommodate workers who chose this as a career path and calling.
