Why Everyone Should Have a Coach

Why Everyone Should Have a Coach

IN 1989 I started a personal training business having just returned from the USA with some great ideas and no money. I gave my business a posh name (Bonne Sante) and placed an ad in Cheshire Life. I was the only personal trainer advertising in the magazine and I picked up a considerable number of clients.

In those days personal training was very much a 'lifestyles of the rich and famous' kind of thing so building a new business relied very much on creating a brand that was appropriate to the target audience. Although I didn't speak a word of french I knew that Bonne Sante (Healthy) would appeal to the Cheshire Life reader far more than 'Get Beasted with Big G'.

So off I went and built a profitable business which I eventually sold to a fitness friend a couple of years later.

But what has that got to with coaching?

I sense that as the world changes more and more people are seeing the benefits of engaging a coach, whether that be to explore a change of career, new business or to simply re-discover their spark. Professional coaching is where personal training was 20 years or so ago as people look to perform better, believe in themselves and be more productive.

The benefits of coaching are many; 80% of people who receive coaching report increased self-confidence, and over 70% benefit from improved work performance, relationships, and more effective communication skills. 86% of companies report that they recouped their investment on coaching and more (source: ICF).

The interesting thing about coaching is that you have to trouble the comfortable, and comfort the troubled

As coaching seems to have such a positive impact on individuals and businesses I do wonder whether more organisations should create a new post, that of Head Coach. Imagine having such a resource available to improve and maintain the performance of your team members. What an investment that would be.

As a coach myself I have seen people move from a position of self-doubt to self-belief, the knock on effect being unbelievably positive. Some of my clients have been promoted, some secured new jobs and some of the teams I have worked with have grown to understand their individual and combined talents more thoroughly.

I write this now as I have decided to take the coaching I do to a new level and with a greater sense of purpose. I want to help others to become more aware of their own unique talents and consciously apply those talents to everything they do. I also want to help my clients to feel better about themselves and to aim higher than before.

I want to coach my clients to feel unstoppable so if you would like to feel that way please message me privately and we can arrange an introductory chat.

Coach and mentor are often interchangeable but the principle of objective challenge, support, re-enforcement, discovery etc etc are fundamentals of growth - great piece Graeme and so so valuable

I have a coach, in fact I have had three different coaches in the past 20 years. The first was a mentor but when you look at how they helped me develop they were also coach. The second was much more of a business coach, several best selling books and part owner of a business accelerator program. My current coach has nothing to do with fitness and challenges my assumptions about what is and isn’t possible. Each one had different skills and developed me in different ways, but they always developed me. If you have never had coaching get some, it’s the best investment I’ve ever made in my business and myself.
