Why everyone is important
I remember the moment when I learned this lesson. I’m sure I was only about 10 years old and was riding with my Pop in his old chevy pick-up truck. I think we were on Main Street of the little town where I grew up and it was definitely summer. We passed a garbage truck and the smell was extreme to say the least. I don’t know why but I said something disparaging about the garbage man. I think I was just trying to be funny and I don’t remember exactly what I said. I do remember my grandfather raising his voice and telling me to never disrespect a man who is doing an honest days work. That there was dignity in work. Dignity in supporting your family. We then sat there in silence for a very long time. The silence was broken by him saying that he was sorry to yell but it was important for me to know and understand. I told him I understood and I never forget that lesson.
I’ve translated that into something that I say all the time at work. Everyone is important. I don’t have to yell it but I mean it.
