Why Events Make The Best Third Spaces

The importance of genuine human experiences cannot be overstated or overlooked. Let’s face it, the world is buzzing with digital connectivity nowadays and as technology has evolved, so has our preference for online interactions. Apps replaced numerous banking branches, eCommerce became favoured over high streets (and after witnessing Christmas shopping in London, I am very much a fan), remote work went mainstream and learning and development unlocked a whole new era of accessibility by being available online. It’s been incredible to watch, but whilst it works for many companies in running their business operations—it doesn’t work for every aspect of life.

Because amidst this digital transformation, the enduring truth remains that there is an irreplaceable richness to face-to-face engagements that virtual platforms, despite their convenience, are unable to fully replicate.

It’s why third spaces are so vital—and why events are perfect for this.

  • Your first space is home, the place where your comfort resides.
  • Your second space is work, the place where your ambitions unfold.
  • And that third space is a place outside of those where you can socialise, connect, learn and rest in a communal space.

For some, a third space is a gym, for others, it’s a restaurant, a library, a bookstore, a park, a church, a bar or a club. To be honest, there are many. But for me, I think events are unparalleled in providing that space. With their ability to bridge the digital divide, whilst offering a unique balance of in-person interactions and shared experiences, they not only foster genuine connections but also bring depth and authenticity to human engagement.

Experiences make everything in this life, and let’s face it, when planned well events provide the ultimate experiences.

Events Cultivate Communities

Serving as bridges, events transcend mere gatherings; they are immersive experiences that connect individuals from diverse backgrounds who share common interests—whether it’s a self-development event, a comedy show, a business conference or Comic Con. This communal atmosphere not only fosters a sense of belonging but also lays the foundation for building and developing relationships. I’m sure you’ve noticed how when you go to a certain event you often see familiar faces. Or message people you know prior to going to see if they’ll be there? And that’s because the strength of a network built through events extends far beyond the event itself, it helps to create a community that offers support, collaboration, connection and the exchange of ideas in new ways.

Events Facilitate Meaningful Communication?

The magic of events lies in their ability to provide a relaxed setting for genuine social interaction. The whole environment is conducive to authentic social interactions because those interactions aren’t forced. Conversations are able to happen organically, whilst people are watching content, discussing a keynote, engaging in an interaction or observing a performance. It enables interaction and networking to happen in a shared experience, going beyond the exchange of a business card.

Events Provide New Ways to Learn

Whether it's the thrill of a live performance or the serenity of an art exhibit, immersive encounters capture our attention, providing a much-needed break from routine, and revitalising our minds and spirits whilst providing new formats for learning. Workshops, seminars, presentations and performances provide a direct avenue for attendees to discover new insights, opinions and facts that can help them stay abreast of industry trends, and gain insights from seasoned professionals in an interesting way.?

Events Give Voices Volume

From conferences to art exhibitions to cultural festivals, events provide a stage for the exchange of thoughts and ideas. They’re platforms for the celebration of diversity, showcasing varied cultures, ideas, and perspectives. Exposure to this richness not only broadens horizons but also nurtures a mindset open to innovation. It helps us to explore and expand because embracing diverse viewpoints can be a catalyst for creative thinking and problem-solving.

Ultimately, events, as third spaces (in my opinion) reign supreme. Digital connectivity has undoubtedly transformed the way we communicate, but the authenticity that’s embedded in real-world encounters becomes a powerful differentiator. Setting the stage for lasting, meaningful memories, events carve out a specific space where people can foster authentic connections that resonate on a deeper level.

Human connection is so nuanced and you can absolutely build incredible relationships online—some of my most meaningful friendships started that way. But it’s those subtle cues that make the difference. It’s part of why a song can transport you back to a moment at a concert, or a smell can transport you back to childhood. The body language, the warmth of a handshake, and the spontaneity of a laugh or bonding through a shared moment all contribute to the richness of genuine human experiences. And it’s those experiences which leave a lasting impression.
