The infrastructure needed for training my staff, by Jan Jilis van Delsen

This third and last article about training in quick-service restaurants focuses on the infrastructure you need to put in place to deliver training to your staff successfully.

There are four modalities to deliver training:

Classroom or Instructor-Led Training (ILT)

For a classroom-based training deliver you of-course need a suitable room to provide training within reasonable travel distance for your staff. Most trainers will use a meeting room in a hotel for that. Besides, this also allows for a more relaxed atmosphere, and people can network with each other. So make sure that everything is accessible for all your people.

V-ILT (Virtual Instructor-Led Training)

In this pandemic, video calls with Zoom, Google Meet and Teams replaced the classroom, referred to as Virtual-ILT. It's worked well for many, but the online environment takes different interactions with learners and instructors. Learners (and the trainer) need to have an excellent Internet connection and a computer to access the sessions. Make sure the computer has sound and a microphone, and the learner has a quiet place or at least headphones to listen and speak freely.

Blended (mix between online and instructor-led)

Blended learning is a perfect way to adapt and learn most topics. You know the concepts via online learning, do homework alone or in groups. And where needed, you have an instructor-led session in a classroom or by attending a V-ILT session. The learner needs the same accessibility as above mentioned.?

E-learning (Self-paced online courses)

E-learning is solely accessible online through a computer where a headset and a microphone are needed. Moreover, this is the infrastructure you need to provide for your learners. The company might also need to have some infrastructure.

If you use external suppliers for all training delivery, they will provide all software systems needed. In addition, you will require reports from them about all relevant metrics that you can easily share with management and shows the impact the training made.

Nevertheless, if you produce the content, you require the following:

• A learning platform to create and deliver online training to your learners. There are a few types of platforms on the market. E.g. a Learning Management System (LMS) or a Learning Experience Platform (LXP). There are hundreds of them.?
• Content creation tools to create your online learning. There are many tools on the market, and it might be more economical to buy a learning platform with an integrated authoring tool.
• Integrate your LMS with other core systems like your HR system. It pays to future-proof your solution with something that will integrate with other systems you have in place.

Naturally, you also need the skills to manage and administer it. Although there are many companies around that will allow you to outsource some or all these elements. There are some advantages to doing it yourself, however. E.g. complete control of your content, branding and company culture.
