Why Engineering Culture is the #1 way you can unlock productivity and value in technology organisations
Paul Butler
High Performing Organisation Expert - helping financial services build better cultures through developing behaviour at scale
We believe that without change the Tech Giants will put some Financial Services (FS) firms (or divisions of them) out of business. Additionally, when we compare the efficiency, productivity and ROI of many FS technology functions to their Tech Giant peers, the latter group are in significantly better shape.
What is the key difference between these two groups of firms? A fundamental difference is their culture. Of course, having a strong engineering culture is a more natural outcome for the Tech Giants, whose business started out being focused on engineering, but we feel that Technology is now the main battleground for success in Financial Services, and to get great technology outcomes you need a great engineering culture.
So, how can you build a great engineering culture?
We hope to answer that in our Webinar on 23rd June, at 1pm, through hosting a panel discussion with two of our clients Deutsche Bank and Citi. You can register for the webinar here.
During the webinar, we will cover some key elements of how to create a high performing engineering culture, including:
What is Engineering Culture?
Through research and our experience with clients, we’ve distilled key elements of an engineering mindset into four main areas:
The value that an Engineering Culture can create
We’ve seen that culture is behaviour at scale – if all your engineers are equipped with a clear purpose, the right capabilities and the opportunity to continually develop these capabilities across a fulfilling career; if they are connected across the organisation and working well together in teams, then outstanding technology outcomes will follow. Those outcomes can include:
- Engineer development programmes (for ~30 engineers) generating average benefits of ~$10m+
- Having the right ‘conditions for success’ for change moves programme/initiative success rates from 52% to 94%
- Retention of engineering talent increases by 75%
- Effective communities and teams increase productivity by >12% and doubles innovation
How to build Engineering Culture
We’ll be discussing some of the approaches that we’ve helped our clients put in place, including hearing first hand from Deutsche Bank and Citi on what they implemented, and the difference it has made to their technology organisations. We will also share information on how we assess engineering culture and benchmark organisations against ‘what good looks like’ through our research-based methods and databases.
Join us for insights on how to create an Engineering Culture that makes a real difference to unlocking productivity and value in your technology organisation.
We look forward to seeing you on 23rd June, at 1pm. You can register here.
