Why Employers Catfish Job Seekers Over 40

One of the more frustrating things about being an age 40+ job seeker, is being catfished by employers.


According to Wikipedia, catfishing refers to the creation of a fictitious online persona, or fake identity with the intent of deception. For age 40+ job seekers, this refers to fictitious jobs and interviews.


Catfishing wastes your time as an age 40, 50, or 60+ job seekers, causing you to invest high levels of your job search time/efforts on jobs and interviews that were never intended to choose a new hire.


There are three major ways that employers catfish age 40+ job seekers:


  1. Posting Job Ads That Don't Represent Real Jobs: About 30% of all job ads don't represent real jobs, but instead are posted to fish for candidate resumes. Resumes of age 40+ job seekers can be?especially helpful to keep HR departments in compliance with hiring laws (and show they are "considering" a high enough level of job seekers in their 40s, 50s, and 60s+).
  2. Job Fairs:?Job fairs are rarely intended to identify potential new hires (other than possibly for entry level and new college grads). Instead, the primary intent of job fairs are to gather more resumes and applications, to help the employer meet minimum demographic reporting standards.
  3. Compliance Interviews: In order for HR departments to comply with state and federal hiring laws, employers need to show they interview above the minimum % of age 40, 50 and 60+ job seekers. HR departments are responsible for "juicing" their reporting statistics, by interviewing age 40+ candidates only to increase their reporting levels for age 40+ candidates (these can also include 2nd interviews and even finalist interviews). Compliance interviews aren't intended to hire the candidate, only to engineer higher interview statistics for a protected job seeker category.
