Why Employee Engagement Programs Don't Work Anymore

The workplace has dramatically evolved, shifting from office smoking and nine-to-five schedules to work-life integration. In today's competitive job market, organizations must prove their worth to potential employees who scrutinize company culture, technology, and leadership.

Traditional strategies like embellishing company stories or investing in employee engagement programs provide only short-term satisfaction. This is akin to adrenaline shots that wear off, leaving employees dissatisfied and companies in a never-ending cycle of trying to please their workforce. In psychology, this is called the hedonic treadmill, and it’s not a sustainable way to attract and retain people.

To break this cycle, it's time to focus on employee experience. By addressing core workplace practices and preventing disempowerment, organizations can create an environment where employees genuinely thrive. Employee experience is about 3 environments that organizations can design for which are culture, technology, and space.?

The future of work demands a shift from temporary engagement to long-term employee experience. Embrace this change to create a truly satisfying and empowering work environment that attracts and retains top talent.

I talk about this more in the video below which was taken from one of my keynotes.?

Employee engagement efforts can neutralize negative employee experiences that demotivate workers but they don't motivate workers to do perform their best every day.

I fully agree! At best, engagement efforts can neutralize a bad work environment. Engaging work that provides opportunities to create value and be valued for what you contribute requires far more than workforce flexibility and "good managers". Engaging work that motivates us gives us the opportunity to leverage our talents to achieve important goals and get even better at what we do, accomplishing even more. Many jobs don't require or even allow people to leverage their unique talents and do what they do best.

Agreed! To win the marketplace, you must first win in the workplace. Organisations must adopt practices and develop a work culture that fosters and encourages growth. This will build employee trust and loyalty in the long run and outlast all temporary perks!

I totally agree ????. I have been saying for a long time now that People are treated like Commodities: labelled in boxes, all the same, disposable, replaceable. Just like how many treat consumer goods. But People are individuals. They are all unique. Different motivations, different experiences, different strengths, different inclinations...and different potential impact to make. This is why we focus on culture change from the ground up, not the top down. All cultural factors should be fully traceable throughout every process and activity. Otherwise, yes, certainly since the pandemic, many have realised how much they are treated like commodities...and are turning the tables.
