On LinkedIn, people make careers and businesses.

It is the most powerful tool for your career.

But, most people let this tool gather dust in the corner. They didn't use it well.

The 2 most simple and powerful ways to leverage LinkedIn are to:

  1. Create your own engaging content
  2. Support other's quality content

I've written in past editions about how to create your content [here and here].

Today I'm going to teach you how to use a feature on LinkedIn to get the most out of engaging with other's content. Plus, it'll save you a ton of time.

Wait. Why Support Other People?

If you're here saying, hey, "Why should I support other people anyway? I want to build my own business. I want the eyes of potential customers on ME!" You are in the right place, my friends.

Supporting other people on this platform does a few things to help you.

  1. It helps you see & learn from high-quality content. Digital writing is a specific form of writing. You need to daily see & engage with what is working for other people so you can apply it to yourself
  2. Bigger accounts = more followers to see you. When you comment on a post of an account that is bigger than you, you get in front of more people. Especially, if it is a high-quality, well-thought-out comment.
  3. You develop cool friendships. You aren't playing the speed game. You're playing the long game. When you support a few people you like consistently you help them out. They, in turn, are likely to support you in time as well.

Scrolling Your Feed Is A Waste of Time

You see the value of supporting other people.

Now, let's dig into how to do that.

I don't have to tell you that social media can be a giant, energy-sucking black hole.

1st outdated way of supporting other people:

Scrolling through your feed. Commenting on what you see.

Why this doesn't work:

  • You'll see every one of your connection's recent posts. They may interest you. But, commenting on every post that the algorithm spits out won't get you very far. Chances are you have a wide variety of people in your network and most of them aren't solid content creators. They are people posting about new jobs and promotions. You want to spend your time teaching. You want to interact with a few people. Those fostering very interesting conversations. 90%+ of people in your network don't do that.

2nd outdated way of supporting other people:

Look up individual people each day to interact with.

Why this doesn't work:

  • I can tell you from years of experience doing this that it is hard. I have a GoogleSheet dedicated to all the LinkedIn accounts I like to follow and interact with. For years, each day I would open that sheet and click on each account. Each took a while to load. The process felt slow. If the person hadn't written for a few days, it felt like a waste of time to check for anything new.

LinkedIn Saved Search = The Better Way

What my saved search toolbar looks like

A month ago I learned about LinkedIn Saved Searches, and it was like a lightbulb going off in my head. This is the easy way I needed for years! ??

How they work:

  1. You can enter up to 20 personal accounts that interest you. You can follow some business accounts too.
  2. LinkedIn spits out a URL. This unique URL is your saved search.
  3. Whenever you use that URL you get a feed of LinkedIn content that is only the accounts you chose.

This method makes it so easy to see what my favorite people wrote on LinkedIn in the past 24 hours. So, each morning I can pop open that URL and very quickly read and comment on all their content.

This method takes me about 20 minutes each morning. I count that as 20 minutes well-spent. I used them to learn from my favorite people and to interact with their posts. Then, the rest of the day I don't have to check in on LinkedIn again. Tomorrow morning I'll have a new feed and can see right where I felt off.

You can edit the search as often as you like.

I played around with mine for a few weeks until I got it right.

LinkedIn Saved Search is a great asset. It will help you use your time and interactions on this platform well. It makes it very easy to curate WHO I want to engage with (and stay on top of it).

Here is a great demo on how to set up your own in <5 minutes.

Here is a Saved Search I started for you. Now, run with it!

TL;DR

  • Regularly comment on other's posts to make the most of LinkedIn
  • Don't trust the algorithm to give you that content
  • Create your own Saved Search
  • Spend your energy on your Saved Search results
  • Then, over time, reap all the rewards LinkedIn can offer

One of the tactics I use is to go to my DMs and engage with the people's content from my DMs, especially those who would be a great client. Then I go to my feed and engage with the posts that I like. And I naturally add 10-20 people just from organic interactions with the posts. Easy, right?

For the life of me, I can't figure out why this works from the link you posted, but isn't showing anything if I create it from scratch.
