Why Don’t Employers Post Jobs For Keyword Guessers?

Why Don’t Employers Post Jobs For Keyword Guessers?

How much time and effort do you spend agonizing over what keywords you should include in your resume? Probably way too much.

Can you name a job where it's important to be a great keyword guesser? That's because employers don't care about your ability to guess keywords.

If you're spending much energy focusing on keywords, you're focusing on the wrong thing. Keywords rarely get you quality interviews and almost never land you jobs.

Here's what focusing on keywords does ... it slows down your job search, and helps you get the lowest quality interviews for the worst jobs.

Here are a few reasons why focusing on keywords is a wasted effort:

  1. You have terrible odds of guessing enough of the right keywords to get through an Applicant Tracking System, because you need to match nearly 100%, with exact word and phrase matches.
  2. ATSs don't match synonyms or common meanings like Google does - They don't have anywhere near the programming?sophistication?as Google.
  3. Different employers use different terminology for the same thing, even within the same industry. Most of these aren't included in the job description.
  4. You're basing your efforts on a job description that's at least a year old. Even though hiring manager needs and search criteria have changed, the job description rarely does, even for newly created positions.
  5. JobScan isn't enough to help ... because it's based on a job description that doesn't meet current needs, or include the enough of that employer's internal terminology.
  6. Getting through an ATS isn't enough to get interviews - only about 15% of resumes that make it through Applicant Tracking Systems are awarded interviews.

And there's a reason that sweating over keywords is a poor use of your time ... because employers don't hire keyword guessers.

The only reasons you're spending your precious time and energy on keywords are:

  • You've been given bad advice to focus on guessing the right keywords
  • No one has taught you a better way to get interviews
