Why Does Insecurity Persist?

Welcome back to The Global Network Insight, your go-to resource for insights and practices in behavioral change, self-development, communication, relationships, and human dynamics!

This is Sayaka Kinashi from the BCon Global Network Team. Last week, I began sharing the inspiring insights from Mr. Matsuyama Daiko, Deputy Head Priest of Taizo-in Zen Buddhist Temple, Myoshin-ji, from his keynote address at the Well-being Co-Creation Lab in September 2022. (The original summary is available in Japanese here.)

Let’s continue to explore his thoughts on why the feeling of insecurity seems to persist and even grow stronger in today’s world.

Why Does the Feeling of Insecurity Persist?

1. The Comparative Society

In today's world, everything is constantly evaluated. From the food we eat to the hospitals we visit and the schools we attend, we are surrounded by a culture of comparison. This can sometimes lead us to question our own perceptions. For instance, imagine trying a new restaurant and loving the meal, only to later discover a low rating on a prestigious foodie website. It can make you wonder, "Am I missing something here?" When this culture of comparison becomes too pervasive, it can erode our confidence in our own judgments.

Moreover, I don't think that true happiness is to be found in a comparative society. Instead, it often leads to a false sense of superiority.

2. The Disparity with Reality

Social media can sometimes feel like a highlight reel of everyone's lives, filled with stunning meals and dreamy getaways that make our own everyday routines seem a bit dull in comparison. It's easy to get caught up in comparing ourselves when we're only seeing the best bits of others' lives.

But the reality is, life has its ups and downs for everyone, not just what we see online. Constant exposure to these curated snapshots can create a false sense of inadequacy and isolation, making it challenging to find genuine happiness in a world that's so focused on social media.

3. Dependence on AI and Algorithms

Algorithms and AI are everywhere in our daily lives, quietly influencing our choices even when we're not paying attention. Despite technological progress and our desire for predictability, reality often surprises us. Platforms like Amazon and YouTube constantly offer suggestions, making it challenging to make our own choices.

And in the midst of all this tech stuff, we might be missing out on those chance encounters that make life interesting. That's where the ability to notice things comes in, as pointed out by neuroscientist Nobuko Nakano. Those who feel lucky tend to jump into things quickly and are curious about everything, which leads to more opportunities.

If we rely too much on algorithms, we miss out on those unexpected moments and the joy of noticing things.

What Fuels Your Sense of Uncertainty?

Consider what elements in your life are contributing to feelings of insecurity or uncertainty. Reflect on how the comparative society, social media pressures, or dependence on technology may impact your well-being.
