Why H&M faced a lawsuit? What actually just happened? Everything you need to know in short.
H&M, a powerful brand with hardworking souls working from all over the world. They are well known for quality product & their initiatives for stepping forward in terms of saving the world. The only way to save our world from getting polluted is to become more sustainable than ever.
?People around the world are mad about this brand & mostly youth who are conscious about saving the earth for a better future.
?You might be asking yourself,
But suddenly what happens? Why there is a lawsuit filed against H&M? What is actually behind all of these?
Today we will be talking about all of these from top to bottom in short.
So, On 27 July 2022. Chelsea Commodore sued H&M for “Misleading Information” or Greenwashing its products to consumers.
Chelsea Commodore claims that “Most of the products H&M marketing as sustainable is not that much sustainable.”
Mostly they use sustainable score cards & charge more from environmentally conscious consumers.
Commodore alleges, “H&M has created an extensive marketing scheme to greenwash its products” to present them “as environmentally-friendly when they are not.”
In providing examples, H&M marketed one of their product as sustainable claiming that the product uses less than 20% water while being produced but in an open investigation by Quartz it uses 20% more water.
They gave another example of H&M, H&M marketed one of their product as sustainable because 30% water is being used while producing the garment but in reality, it uses 31% more water making it worse than conventional ones. ?
Commodore accused H&M for falsifying its sustainable profile & inaccurate data.
The Conscious collection claims to contain at least 50% of organic materials like cotton or recycled polyester but in reality, those are comprised of indisputably unsustainable materials like polyester, which is not biodegradable.
This has now become a matter of legacy & reputation for this brand. But most of the suppliers of H&M say that H&M never compromises quality. Even as a textile engineering student I also appreciate initiatives taken by H&M for a sustainable earth. But they need to fix this issue or there will be a consumer trust issue near future for sure.
Every crisis is an opportunity! Let’s see what comes next. Till then good luck to H&M.
