Why does it all matter?

Why does it all matter?

Pride to me is a celebration for being who you are without fear of discrimination.

I remember a time when the terms lesbians, gay, trans, were never discussed or talked about in my family as a child. It wasn’t even acknowledged but instead treated as a cultural difference to what was the said ‘norm’ to how a British Asian person should be.?Growing up I felt isolated, lonely and terrified at the consequence of sharing my true self.?

Being part of Pride last year, my first one, was an eclectic mix of joy, freedom and being proud of who you are.?There was a sense of relief. It was also a platform to show my 8 year old who prefers to have short hair, wear shorts all year round and not a fan of dresses, that you can wear and love who you want – be true to you.

This year in Birmingham was also incredible! The entire SW team are awesome and it is always a joy and honour to be a part of an incredible walking group. I felt a burst of pride for being part of SW and representing the organisation, as well as the diversity and joy of being your true self. Joy at the music, colours, dancing, glamour and glitz!

Bringing my whole self to work

Being true to me and accepting myself first has given me so much more confidence in bringing my whole self to work. I feel like I belong here.?

The difference Spectrum makes

Spectrum, our LGBTQ+ colleague networking group is incredible, I am so happy to be a part of. The discussions held and pride events have helped me in accepting myself as I currently am. This has helped me in my work and grown confidence in how I manage my teams as well as in my personal life.

There is so much more awareness and education needed which Spectrum nurture and use as a platform for this.

Two weekends ago I was taking my children to Gujarati school and was told by Police to avoid the protestors. Later, I found out that a there was a protest against the ‘Drag Queen Story Hour’ at the Wyvern Theatre. It is so important to be able to express our opinions and disagreement in a safe environment, we learn from each other and one day when I think of my children join the working environment, groups like Spectrum are so important and vital in paving the way for the next generation.

Love Pride - if we could bottle the community spirit created by so much diversity celebrating life together and spray it over the world we would all be better for it. See you next year. #pridemonth2023
