Why Do YOU Work In Sales?

Why Do YOU Work In Sales?

I want to ask an important question, why do YOU work in sales? (Please write your answer in the comments box below as I'll tally all of the reasons given and publish the results).

Let me explain why I'm asking this and why I believe it's important to know why exactly you chose a career in sale and how knowing this is key to your success.

Most people believe that anyone working in sales is doing it for one simple reason.....MONEY! Now don't get me wrong, that's not far from the truth for a lot of sales people and it's not a bad thing either.

What I've found after working in sales for over 14 years and working with sales people all across the world is that people have different reasons for working in sales and it's important for both sales people and sales managers to understand that.

Why should YOU know why you work in sales?

It's important to know and remember just why you're working in sales because you'll need that motivation and inspiration to drive you to success. If it's money then knowing and remembering that will keep you focused on driving sales activities like prospecting and closing. Sales is a tough job and if you don't know what you're working for it's hard to find that drive needed to push through the challenges.

You might be motivated by providing for your family, buying a new car, travelling the world, developing a career, working in an area of interest etc. Everyone has different reasons which is why I've asked at the start what yours is. By knowing why you do what you do, whenever you need to tap into some motivation you can remind yourself!

Why should your MANAGER know why you work in sales?

A lot of sales leaders and managers fall into the trap of thinking that all sales people are only motivated by money. When it comes to 1-2-1's and incentives they're all focused around money. Well for the person who is working towards career development they would be more motivated working towards training or progression that just financial reward.

It's important to know that these reasons may and are likely to change. A single sales person might be driven by money but when they settle down and have a family, time with family and balance may become their key driver.

Sales is a stressful career, it's hard work and so knowing why you are going to endure the stress, pressure and hard work is key to getting through it all! In my experience it has only been those who know exactly what they're working for who succeed in sales.

If you're working for money, work out how much money you want to make and then reverse engineer that to work out how you can earn that in your role. How many months would it take? How many sales would you need to make? Create the plan for success and then follow it.

Perhaps you're looking for career development. In that case work out what experience, knowledge and success you would need to have to be considered for the next step. Create the plan and work hard to execute it.

The key in the first instance is to know WHY you are working in sales!

Please do write your WHY in the comments box below and let's see what the common reasons are for people working in sales! I'll publish the results next week!
