Why do you do what you do?

We do a lot of things. Some of them are intentional; many of them are automatic, unconscious, and habitual.

In speaking with hundreds of people about their careers over the years, I've found that many people find themselves on professional cruise control. We accept a role and continue doing what we're doing until something stops working-- we have a conflict with a boss, feel stifled, are laid off, feel unfulfilled, etc. It is only then that we stop to evaluate our situation. It is then that we hit the brakes, the accelerator, or dare to venture onto a new road.

Rather than waiting for something negative to happen, what if you took stock along the way? What if you stopped to ask yourself, why do you do what you do?

Today I encourage you to think about one of the biggest priorities in your life. It might be your job, side gig, volunteer opportunity, typical routine, etc. Choose whatever feels automatic or habitual. Take a step back and evaluate it. Ask yourself the critical questions below. Determine if the reason why you do what you do is a reason that resonates with you. Determine if it's something worth continuing.

Then, I hope that you dare to adjust your trajectory as needed. Dare to exit the roundabout and explore a new way forward.

Self-reflection:

Why do you do what you do?

What is its value?

What do you want to keep doing?

What doesn't feel right anymore and needs to change?
