Why do you LOVE to do what you do?

Why do you LOVE to do what you do?

I've now asked well over 100 people this AWESOME question.

Before we jump in, what questions do you ask when meeting someone new?

Look at this is Harvard Law School Put together.

Or maybe this list that Indeed put together.

Spoiler alert: Almost all the questions they proposed suck IMO.

Lets get back to the "Why do you love to do what you do?" question.

In my opinion, it is the absolute best question to ask when meeting someone new, and works in all sorts of situations.... from networking events, sales calls, zoom calls, interviews, new hire onboarding, and even friendly social events.

Imagine you and I just ran into each other, and I say:

So happy to meet you. Before we go any farther, I just want to ask you one question.... Why do you LOVE to do what you do? Feel free to answer this question in any way you'd like.

I challenge you to take out your phone, put it on selfie video mode, and answer that question right now.

Or, at the very least, take out a pen and paper or your notes app and write down your answer.

Lets get in to today's quick lesson:

Take a moment to learn people's BIG Why.

My original intent when writing today's newsletter was to share all of the awesome responses that people told me. I decided to save that for next weeks newsletter. Today lets just focus on why this is an awesome question.

Here are 5 reasons why "Why do you LOVE to do what you do?" is one of the best questions you can ask someone:

  1. This question catches them off guard. VERY few people have a pre-planned canned response to this question. This forces them to be authentic in the moment and really do a quick self-analysis.
  2. This question creates an AHA moment. After asking this question well over 100 times, I can tell you that people literally LIGHT UP when they start formulating their answer.
  3. This question creates a true connection. Their emotional response will open up their heart and all of the good feelings they experience with you.
  4. This question can lead to more discovery. My FAVORITE follow up question is.... "That is soooo cool.... I'd love to hear your favorite story or example of (whatever they responded with)"
  5. This question gives you an opportunity to help them do what they love to do. I'll get more into this in next weeks newsletter.

Lets get into action!

ACTION TIME:

  1. Answer the question "why do you love to do what you do" for yourself. If you are brave enough, I'd love you to share it in the comments below. If you are only half brave, send me a private message and I promise I'll respond personally.
  2. Ask 5 new people you meet in the next 5 days this question. Take note of their answers.

As always, thank you. I know time is extremely limited for many of us, and I appreciate the few moments you shared with me today to read through this newsletter. I promise to continue to provide fresh, actionable content week after week that will help you and the people around you grow and have a greater impact in the world!

Your Friend,

Dan
