WHY DO YOU LEAD THE WAY YOU DO?
For years I have had two seemingly unrelated thoughts:
????I find it hard to learn good leadership from others, but unfortunately, I find it VERY easy to learn lousy leadership from others.
????I cannot lead like others because I am not them.
Well, about 6 years ago, as I was prepping for a leadership presentation, it hit me: these statements are related!!!!
??I CANNOT LEARN GOOD LEADERSHIP FROM OTHERS BECAUSE I AM NOT THEM, PLUS, I NEED TO LEAD IN A MANNER THAT SUITS MY VALUES AND LEADERSHIP TENETS!!!!!
I am not sure why it took me 30+ years to figure that out, but it did.
Anyway, now I want to consider who you are as a leader.?Seriously, take a moment to consider this idea, which is a relatively easy task for most adults.
Now, I want to challenge you to determine WHY you lead the way you do.? No, not the whole Simon Senek-what motivates you why (which is great, BTW), but rather, why do you lead in the manner you do?
I have asked countless leaders this question and you want to talk about squirm!!!? The answer to this question requires one to look within and determine where some life lessons were learned and this makes many people very uncomfortable.
I have been called names (albeit good-naturedly) when I press veteran leaders on this topic.? Why?? Because looking within sometimes makes us face situations, memories, experiences, etc., that we would prefer not to encounter.
This is not an easy task and I have been looking within for 14+ years, thanks to constant questions from my partner, Michael Juech, EdD, SFO , and am still unsure of all the answers.
Good leaders are in a constant state of evolution and this is one tool you can use to enhance your leadership.

??This is leadership.
??You can do this.
??Good luck.

6 个月Dan, your insights into the complexities of leadership resonate deeply with me more than I actually thought they would. Not because of the aforementioned complexities, but rather because of the simplicity of the actual question. "Why do you lead the way you do?" Is about as as straight forward as you get and I find this question essential for both personal and professional growth. My first inclination is to answer in a sparky fashion, "Because that is who I am.", and leaving it at that. And although the humor in me would like to do that (and I can't even begin to tell you how much), but my reflective/introspective side wont allow it. I lead the way I do because my experiences, values, and personal state create a unique leadership style, unique to me and only me, that is authentic and effective. Becoming a continual active participant in defining my uniquely tailored leadership style has birthed an awareness that has enabled me to continually refine my approach, with the assurance that I lead with integrity and purpose. Thanks Dan, for once again prompting this deep reflection within me. Tongue-in-cheek or not, it's through such introspection that we can truly grow as leaders. I'd love to dicuss further if you'd like.
