Why do Wind Turbines need Lubrication ?

Abhinnay S Mittal Nimit Mittal

Lubrication plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of wind turbines, safeguarding their components from premature wear and tear. By protecting vital parts, lubrication enables turbines to perform at their best, maximizing energy production and overall productivity. Grease oil and grease are integral to the functioning of key components such as the gearbox, pitch gear, open gear, and yaw gear. Wind Turbine Lubrication Consumer points are not accessible and are at a very high altitude and these turbines are located in remote areas? which calls for Automatic Centralized Lubrication Systems which are time based and without manual intervention except for periodic maintenance.

Operating in Challenging Environments

Wind turbines are often installed in harsh environments, where factors such as dust and airborne particles can pose significant challenges. These abrasive elements can damage equipment, leading to failures if not properly managed. Adequate lubrication acts as a protective shield, mitigating these risks and enhancing the longevity of components.

Challenging Environments for Wind Turbines

The Role of Lubrication in Moving Parts

Wind turbines rely on numerous moving parts, and without proper lubrication, these components face excessive friction, leading to damage and reduced efficiency. Turbines are equipped with blades that rotate the rotor, while the nacelle, positioned atop the turbine tower, houses essential systems including the gearbox, generator, controller, and brake.

Engineers meticulously design wind turbines to balance durability and compactness, ensuring they can endure heavy loads while fitting seamlessly within the nacelle. Each component is vital for wind energy generation. For instance, the yaw motor and drive ensure the turbine aligns perpendicular to the wind, capturing maximum energy. A failure in any part can cause downtime, directly affecting energy output.

Gearbox Vulnerabilities and the Importance of Lubrication

The gearbox is one of the most critical and vulnerable components of a wind turbine’s drivetrain. It is subjected to various stressors, including fluctuating wind speeds, changes in direction, vibrations, and moisture ingress. These factors can accelerate wear and tear, making the gearbox prone to breakdowns.

One common issue in gearboxes is micro pitting—a type of gear failure that occurs in rolling or sliding contact environments. If not addressed, micro pitting can escalate to gear tooth breakage, necessitating costly replacements and causing turbine downtime. Adequate lubrication is key to minimizing micro pitting, helping to reduce repair costs and prevent energy production losses.

Challenges in Gearbox Lubrication

Micro pitting often results from constantly changing loads within the gearbox. Additional contributing factors include insufficient lubricant film thickness, viscosity inconsistencies, and foaming. Moreover, moisture and water intrusion can degrade lubricant performance, further exacerbating the risk of component failure. Removing water from a gearbox is particularly challenging, often requiring a complete oil change.

The Necessity of Regular Maintenance

Changing the oil in a wind turbine gearbox is a complex but essential task. It requires skilled technicians and significant time investment. Periodic analysis of lubricants, through techniques like oil sampling and debris monitoring, is crucial in determining the optimal time for oil changes. This proactive approach helps prevent unexpected failures, ensuring turbines remain operational and productive.
