Why Do We Update Our Courses?

Have you ever cooked a recipe from a really old cookbook? Maybe one that belonged to your mother, grandmother, or even further back???

They are full of great recipes, but sometimes you’ll come across instructions or ingredients that remind you just how old this recipe is.??

For example, you might find an instruction that says "bake in a hot oven" without a specific temperature, leaving you to guess what "hot" means. Sometimes you’ll even see measurements like “a teacup of sugar” or “a knob of butter”, which requires a bit of interpretation…or just plain guessing!??

What if someone updated these recipes and gave more modern instructions that you could actually use? Isn’t that so much better???

If it’s true for old cookbooks, how much more true is it for training in the workplace???

Let’s talk about why we update our courses and what sort of questions we ask ourselves when we do so.??

Changes to How We Use Software??

Microsoft is always releasing new features and tools to make working even easier, and it’s so important to keep up with those. (In fact, that’s why we now offer Upskilling workshops that solely focus on the past year’s updates.)?

Consider one example: not that long ago, VLOOKUP and XLOOKUP were all the rage in Excel. These were the formulas you needed to know to understand and analyze your data.???

Now, they’re more common-place and are quickly being replaced by HLOOKUP.??

Or remember when Microsoft introduced ribbons? A lot of training focused on the difference between the old drop-down menu and the new ribbons and how to maximize how you’d use the ribbons. Now, we forget that there was anything else! It’s simply become the standard.?

So, we regularly review our training to ensure that it still reflects how our audience uses Microsoft’s suite of tools and showcases the latest features and tools. We also add new courses that address emerging trends and technologies, so you are always equipped with the most up-to-date knowledge and skills.?

Sometimes, there are marked changes in the workplace that force us to change how we approach training.??

The pandemic is an easy example that comes to mind. It has forever changed where and how people work and collaborate, made hybrid and remote work commonplace and made us all too familiar with tools like Zoom, Teams, etc.???
