Josephine Babirye's insightful question about the resistance to personal branding in one of my posts , "How do we make our personal brands more compelling, genuine, and impactful?" hit a nerve. This was her comment; "This is great insight Elijah. However I find that many people will still resist the idea of personal branding even when they know these fundamentals. Have you experienced this as well? Any insights as to why this is typically the case?" Here is my response to this great question.
Picture this: you're at a networking event, surrounded by successful professionals eagerly exchanging business cards and sharing their latest achievements. It's your turn to speak, but you hesitate. Despite your accomplishments, promoting yourself feels awkward and uncomfortable.
Does this scenario sound familiar? If so, you're not alone. Many of us resist personal branding, even though we recognize its importance. But why is that? Let's explore the underlying reasons behind this resistance and discover how to overcome it.
1. The Fear of Self-Promotion: “I Don’t Want to Be That Person”
We’ve all met that person—the one who seems to turn every conversation into a brag fest. No one wants to be seen as boastful or self-centered, which is why the idea of self-promotion can feel so off-putting.
But here’s the truth: Personal branding isn’t about bragging. It’s about sharing your unique value with the world. Remember, “It’s not bragging if you can back it up.” – Muhammad Ali
Your personal brand is simply the way you showcase that ability to others. It’s not about being loud; it’s about being authentic.
2. The Misconception: “Isn’t Personal Branding Just for Influencers?”
Many people think personal branding is only for influencers, entrepreneurs, or those in creative fields. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. Your brand is what other people say about you when you’re not in the room.
Think of personal branding like a lighthouse. ??? It’s not just for ships (or influencers) out at sea. Whether you’re a teacher, engineer, or accountant, your personal brand is what guides others to you. It’s the beacon that highlights your strengths, values, and expertise, helping you stand out in your field.
In today’s digital world, where everyone’s online presence is their first impression, having a personal brand is not optional—it’s essential.
3. Imposter Syndrome: “Am I Really Good Enough?”
Let’s be honest—many of us struggle with imposter syndrome. We doubt our abilities, worry we’re not as talented as others, and wonder if we’re truly deserving of recognition.
Maya Angelou once said, “I have written eleven books, but each time I think, 'Uh oh, they’re going to find out now. I’ve run a game on everybody, and they’re going to find me out.'”
Remember, your personal brand isn’t about being the best; it’s about being the best version of yourself.
4. Time and Resources: “I’m Too Busy for This”
Building a personal brand takes time, effort, and sometimes money. It can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re juggling a demanding job and personal life.
But consider this: Rome wasn’t built in a day. Start small. Share an article that resonates with you, update your LinkedIn profile, or connect with a colleague over coffee. Every little step counts.
As leadership expert John C. Maxwell said, “Small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.”
Don’t let the idea of time and resources be an excuse. Consistency, even in small doses, can build a powerful personal brand over time.

5. Perceived Lack of Necessity: “My Work Should Speak for Itself”
“I don’t need a personal brand; my work speaks for itself.”
This is a common refrain, especially among those in technical or less visible roles. But here’s the thing: In a noisy world, even the best work can go unnoticed.
Think of your personal brand like the packaging of a product. ?? The contents may be fantastic, but if the packaging doesn’t catch someone’s eye, they might never discover what’s inside. Your personal brand is the packaging that draws people in and invites them to explore your work further.
6. Fear of Vulnerability: “What if I Fail?”
Putting yourself out there means opening up to the possibility of failure. What if your content doesn’t resonate? What if you make a mistake? This fear of vulnerability can be paralyzing. However, failure is an integral part of growth. Embrace the possibility of failure as a stepping stone to success. Each setback is a learning opportunity that shapes your personal brand.
“Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change.”- Brené Brown
7. Overwhelmed by Options: “Where Do I Start?”
The sheer number of platforms and strategies for personal branding can be overwhelming. Should you focus on LinkedIn, start a blog, or dive into video content? This confusion can lead to inaction. Start by identifying where your audience spends their time and begin there. Simplify your strategy by focusing on one platform initially and expanding as you gain confidence and clarity.
“The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.”
8. Comparing Yourself to Others: “I Can’t Compete”
In the age of social media, it’s easy to compare yourself to others who seem to have flawless personal brands. This comparison can be discouraging and lead to feelings of inadequacy. Remember, everyone’s journey is unique. Focus on your own progress and celebrate your milestones, no matter how small they may seem. Your personal brand should reflect your unique experiences and perspectives, not someone else’s.
“Comparison is the thief of joy.”_ Theodore Roosevelt
Overcoming the Resistance
So, how do we overcome this resistance? Start by reframing your mindset. Personal branding isn’t about putting on a mask or becoming someone you’re not. It’s about highlighting who you already are, in the most authentic way possible.
Actionable Tips:
Personal branding isn’t just for influencers or extroverts—it’s for everyone. It’s a way to take control of your narrative, share your expertise, and connect with others on a deeper level.
So the next time you feel that resistance, remember: You have a unique story to tell, and the world needs to hear it.
Let’s start building that lighthouse together. ??
