Why do we need environmental monitoring?

Since the 1960’s there has been a requirement within UK legislation to control the effects of construction activities on the local environment whilst a culture for cost reduction has always put pressure on the adoption of truly effective environmental monitoring regimes.

There can be significant tangible benefits if the monitoring is approached with a clear focus on addressing the environmental issues that will almost certainly occur.

·???????For all demolition and major construction projects environmental monitoring will be required by the local authority. With early appointment a good understanding of the authority’s specific requirements for the particular project can be acquired and with regular authority engagement a mutually cooperative relationship can be established.

·???????Having a robust environmental monitoring system for noise, vibration and dust will enable mitigation measures to be put in place to prevent nuisance from these parameters and provide clear benefits to the surrounding community therefore strengthening project/community relationships.

·???????Critically reviewing the environmental monitoring plan throughout the development. From demolition, piling, excavation to superstructure build, can ensure that key parameters are attained and sufficient environmental management is in place at the right time.

·???????By incorporating modern monitoring systems, live web-based data can be accessed immediately, stakeholders can be informed in a timely fashion if levels are near to or exceed limits. This then allows mitigation to be put in place quicker and more effectively.

Adopting a proactive approach to addressing the environmental impact of demolition through to construction activities on the community can considerably reduce project risk, avoiding potentially lengthy delays to programme, fulfilling statutory obligations, highlighting community/corporate responsibility and maintaining a good project reputation.

Murphy Geospatial has the environmental monitoring experience and expertise to support the project from design through to completion.
