Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung once said, “Thinking is difficult. That’s why most people judge.”
Judging is easy and doesn’t require much thinking or reasoning. Our brains are wired to make automatic judgments so that we can move through the world without spending much time or energy understanding everything we see.
Understanding is complex, requiring deep thinking, patience, empathy, and an open mind.
When we judge, does it reflect others or ourselves?
Earl Nightingale said, “When you judge others, you do not define them; you define yourself.” The world around us is our mirror, and judging someone does not define who they are. Instead, it explains who we are. More often than not, the things we dislike and judge others for reflect things we cannot accept about ourselves.
Judgments and opinions.
Judgments are statements. They are opinions presented as facts with no room for discussion. When caught in the web of judgment, you have decided that your opinion is the only truth and stand firm in defending it, no matter the consequences.
Opinions are our view of the world based on our personal experiences—our likes and dislikes. None of us sees the world precisely as another person. We see it differently, as well as the people that occupy it. When we start expressing opinions as statements of facts, with no room for the possibility of another side to the coin, we have stepped into the realm of being judgmental.
When we make decisions, they are often created based on judgment. Making a judgment is, therefore, part of our day-to-day lives. However, when we cross the line and use them as statements of right and wrong or degrees of someone’s goodness or worthiness based on our values, that’s when we get into hot water.
Be curious, not judgmental.
