Why Do We Get Pimples

What causes pimples on us??

Pimples are also referred to as blemishes, zits, blackheads and whiteheads. It is a common part of puberty as almost 8 out of 10 teenagers and many adults experience it but I understand that when you see a big gross pimple on your nose in the mirror, it isn't easy to deal with and makes you want to hide from the world by running into the deepest forest or climbing the highest mountain so that others can't see you. The good news is that for most people acne disappears almost completely by the time they are out of their teens.

The hair follicle in your skin that contains sebaceous glands also known as oil glands, is what causes pimples in the first place. These glands produce an oil called sebum, which is released into the air through pores and lubricates your skin, hair and nails. The sebaceous glands typically produce the appropriate amount of sebum but as you enter puberty, your body starts to expand and hormones stimulate the glands to produce more sebum as they produce sebum inside the pore. At the same time, however, new skin cells are continuously growing and shedding the outer layers of skin, occasionally these dead skin cells are not shed and block the pores, causing an accumulation of the extra amount of sebum and forming a bump around it. Therefore, our body reacts fast and summons immune cells and blood to combat the infection. The blood turns the infected area red, while the immune cells attack and kill the germs, causing swelling and the production of a pimple usually just before a big event each time.?

Did you realise that popping pimples actually makes them worse??

Although popping a pimple can worsen the situation and cause additional redness and irritation, it's better to let the pimples go through their natural cycle. I know it might be difficult to resist the impulse to get rid of those unsightly bumps on your face.

Another interesting fact is that none of the 1200 Kit-man Islanders in Papua New Guinea and the Air Tribe in Paraguay reported having acne. Researchers believe this may be because of their diet, which is entirely free of processed foods and refined sugar. Acne is strongly linked to eating a Western-style diet high in calories, fat and refined carbohydrates. The staples of a typical Western diet are fast food products including burgers, nuggets, hot dogs, French fries, drinks and milkshakes, which may raise the risk of acne. In one study, which included more than 5,000 Chinese teenagers and young adults, a high-fat diet was linked to a 43% higher risk of acne development. Fast food consumption on a regular basis raised risk by 17%.
