Why do we diet alone?

I am new to Health Coaching. I myself have been blessed with a fast metabolism and general good health. 71.6% of adults age 20 and over are overweight, including obesity. (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2017-2018; Harvard School of Public Health, 2020) Holy Smokes!

As I learn from amazing mentors and people that have dedicated their life to helping others achieve their health goals, I realized one important thing about dieting, weight loss, healthy living, etc. The majority of people stop what they are doing because they are doing it on their own. Think about it, we have coaches in sports, teachers in school, and heck, bosses at work. None of those are as important as our health. Why do we go at our health alone?

In my coaching there are 4 components to help people meet and exceed their health goals: A one on one Health Coach, Education, Community, and Guided Nutrition. (more on the other 3 later) I believe that having a coach is the most important component. We can search healthy eating habits, talk to others and even read books on health. But who is showing us the way, guiding us, and keeping us accountable? No one has to do this by themselves! Creating healthy habits can be scary, seem unachievable, and even look like too much work. According to Marcia Pell*, 95% of diets fail and most regain weight in 1-5 years. That's scary.

Like anything we do, having a partner, someone to keep us accountable, or just a voice in our ear gives us a better chance to succeed. I ask you, if you tried to improve your health in the past, have you ever considered having someone guide you?
