Why Do We Believe in God?

A belief in an almighty Creator is a universal explanation for our existence because we mortal humans cannot conceive of any other way the cosmos came into being. -- Those who claim that creation originated out of chaos and some ‘primordial goo” cannot explain from where those essential elements came. – And there are a myriad of other unexplainable mysteries that can only be understood by there being an amazingly intelligent and creative force that made all things work together harmoniously, especially on earth where there is abundant life.
Life is the greatest mystery known to man. How did organic life and humanity come into being? Again, the theory of ‘random chance and chaos’ fails to account for the infinite combinations of chemicals and matter that work together in accordance with universal laws upon which the all existence depends.
Consider this: Just by putting a seed in the ground it can grow into a harvest of food that provides nutrition necessary for mankind! – The list of such countless, occurrences are endless. And they can only be best explained by a belief in a Creator who cares about us.
Certain character traits almost all humans share innately. They are present at birth. -- Intelligence and rational thought are highly developed in humans. We learn and create tools and employ them to sustain and enhance our lives and the lives of others. – And we create families, and communities that function based on rules that permit a healthy and successful society.
There is a common moral standard that almost all humans possess. We know from birth what is right and wrong without the need of being taught. We know it is wrong to murder, to steal, to lie. -- The understanding and desire for fairness, equity and the sharing of resources is common among most living communities. – There exists a universal acknowledgement of what is good and bad in virtually all living beings.

There are rational reasons to believe in a moral Creator who designed our earth to be a habitation of people made in many ways like our Maker. Every culture the world has known has believed this. It is the basis of religion and worship. – God is the provider and sustainer of all life.
It is natural to believe in God. Faith completes a human. It has been the foundation of all cultures since our beginning. Trying to live in ways that please our Creator makes total sense. To live in rebellion against our innate moral nature is destructive. It creates chaos, pain, and death. – We may disagree about the name we call our Maker, but we should all agree that our world will better when we all participate in sustaining and providing for each other, just as God does for us.
“Serve the Lord faithfully with all your heart. Consider all the great things he has done for you.”

1 年This is a profound and thought-provoking reflection on the nature of existence, creation, and the moral fabric that binds humanity. Your articulation of the belief in a Creator as a universal explanation resonates with many and opens up a rich dialogue about the mysteries of life and the universe. The way you connect the tangible aspects of our world, like the growth of a seed, to the grander concept of a creative force, is both poetic and compelling. It's a perspective that invites further exploration and understanding, regardless of individual beliefs. Thank you for sharing these insights; they certainly provide much to ponder and appreciate.

1 年Well said, Mark Baird. Personally speaking, when I made the decision in my early 40's to pursue a personal relationship, my life began to change. Moving from a so so relationship with my wife, no relationship with my daughters to where things are today, it's a no brainer. Given the direction I was heading, I'd probably be dead. I'm glad God continued to chase me.

1 年Absolutely profound insights, Mark Baird. Your perspective on the interconnectedness of life, morality, and belief in a higher power is compelling. The wonders of existence, from the simple act of planting a seed to the universal moral compass we possess, indeed point towards a grander design. It reminds me of the intricate tapestry of life where each thread, no matter how insignificant it seems, plays a crucial role. The underlying sentiment of unity, faith, and purpose resonates deeply with me. I've always held that faith, in whatever form, provides a sense of direction and meaning in our lives. It's refreshing to come across such a thoughtful reflection on our place in the universe and our relationship with the divine.
