Why do we do anything?

Why do we do anything?

A 16-year lucrative corporate career is walked away from to build a business.

Why?

A newly retired accountant writes a €10,000 check to her cocaine-addicted grandson.

Why?

A health-conscious software developer eats an entire pizza when everyone leaves the office.

Why?

Sometimes there are big questions that are hard to wrap my head around.?

Whenever I have big questions like this, I often turn to the most respected and experienced student of human nature I know: Tony Robbins.

Tony Robbins has been studying humans for nearly half a century. He has been in circles of individuals at the highest level, from Bill Clinton to Navy SEALs to Alan Greenspan.?

Tony knows stuff.

After decades of research, he discovered people do things for only two reasons.

“There are two forces that motivate people to do what they do: the desire to avoid pain or the desire to gain pleasure.

It blew my mind when I first heard him speak on this topic. He subsequently wrote about it in his book The Power of Leverage.

Think back to our examples:

The corporate worker walks away from the best job she ever had BECAUSE...

...she might gain pleasure from being around her kids and making memories as they grow up as she builds her dream business.

The grandmother supports the addict BECAUSE...

...she wants to avoid the pain of losing her relationship with her grandson.

The executive eats the pizza BECAUSE...

...he wants to avoid the pain from his long and stressful work.

Pleasure or pain.

Pleasure or pain.

Pleasure or pain.

Did you miss it?

We are emotional creatures that think and not the other way around. Feelings and emotions are the core motivator to guide our every action.?

When doing something that might seem irrational or strange to you, slow down and think...

What is the real motivation here?

Whether it is impulse buying that shiny new top or scrunching up the budget before it's been given a real chance to shine.?

Slow down, ask yourself.....?

Is my desire here to gain pleasure or avoid pain??

When it comes to getting ahead with money, understanding what motivates poor money habits can be key to unlocking the magic money door.?
