Why Do A Tree Inventory

Why Do A Tree Inventory

Improved Urban Planning and Management Tool:?Tree inventories provide essential tree infrastructure data for planning, design, planting, maintenance, and removal of hazardous trees. Good urban budget decision-making is informed by including tree size, species, location, and physical condition in budgets, urban living strategies, and priorities. Tree inventories make it easier to manage your trees. You can track their health, plan for maintenance, and spot potential problem areas needing special attention. It keeps trees safe, healthy, and looking good.

Save Money: Tree inventories can save you money by knowing exactly where resources are needed to target care where it is needed the most. This helps save resources and prevents minor problems that exist now from becoming far more expensive problems down the road.?

Enhanced Public Safety and Reduced Liability:?By identifying and prioritizing hazard trees that require pruning or removal, inventories help tree managers significantly mitigate risks associated with falling branches or trees, enhancing public safety and limiting liability from lawsuits?related to tree failures.

Environmental Benefits: Tree inventories highlight the value of ecosystem services trees?provide, such as improving air quality, reducing stormwater runoff, providing habitat for wildlife, and much, much more. This can help justify and promote urban forestry program budgets. A tree inventory enables you to understand the value your trees bring to the health and well-being of the community and gives you the information you need to protect them.

Economic Value:?Trees can increase property values and contribute to energy savings by providing shade, reducing cooling costs, and allowing sunlight to penetrate in winter. ?Improved property values with trees increase tax revenue. Communities with trees spend more when shopping and have less crime. Communities are also healthier than those without. An inventory can quantify these benefits, making a strong case for investment in urban forestry.

Grant and Funding Opportunities: A well-documented tree inventory can improve the chances of receiving grants and other financial assistance by demonstrating the agency's commitment to maintaining and enhancing the urban forest.

Community Engagement and Education: Tree inventories can engage the community and educate residents about the importance of trees and urban forestry. This can foster a sense of stewardship and support for tree-related initiatives.

Historic and Cultural Preservation:?Inventories can help identify and protect trees of historical or cultural significance, preserving the community's heritage, enhancing its character, and connecting society to our past.

Data-Driven Decision Making:?With accurate and up-to-date information, agencies can make better decisions regarding tree planting, maintenance, and removal, ensuring a safe, healthy, and diverse urban forest. Tree inventories are vital for pests like Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), creating a path forward for tree treatments and removals.

Liability Management:?Maintaining a tree inventory can demonstrate due diligence in the care and inspection of public trees, which can be crucial in liability cases.

Climate Resilience:?Tree inventories can help in planning for climate change by identifying species that are more resilient to changing conditions and ensuring a diverse and adaptable urban forest.

lol I’m getting paid pretty well to do tree inventories…20 years ago I sold (to the best of my knowledge) the first paid tree inventory in the SF Bay Area. I’m sure there were plenty of government funded tree inventories but the HOA I sold it to had a budget for their trees including the costs of annual tree inventories to determine the amount of labor for maintaining their urban forest. My boss thought I was nuts…getting someone to pay me to figure out how much they were going to pay me…

You won’t know until you know what your working with. I have 2,300 trees inventoried on my site, and approximately 5,000 more trees to go. Now helping create tree preservation plans for planned development around tree’s already inventoried. Love every moment I touch a tree. A tree inventoried is the best way to help protect it on any site.
