Sometimes, students in college just don't want to do their work. This can be a big challenge for teachers. But why does this happen? It turns out, there are a few reasons, and understanding them can help teachers make college more interesting and less stressful for everyone.
The Need for Choices
Imagine you’re in a class where you have to do the same kind of assignments every day, even if you find them boring. You might start to dislike doing those assignments, right? Well, students feel the same way. Research shows that when students get to make choices about what they do in class, they are more interested and do better in their studies. For example, instead of just writing essays, students could make videos, create presentations, or even design their own projects. This way, every student can find something they like to do.
Fear of Failure
Nobody likes to fail. When students are scared of failing, they might not even try. In Indian colleges, where the pressure to succeed is very high, this fear can be even stronger. To help students feel less afraid, teachers can change the way they grade. Instead of focusing only on final exams, they could give grades for different kinds of work throughout the semester. Also, saying things like "You worked really hard on this!" instead of "You're so smart!" helps students feel good about trying, even if they don't always succeed.

Feeling Connected and Valued
Students do better when they feel like they belong and their work has a purpose. Teachers can help by connecting lessons to real life. For instance, if students are learning about economics, they could study how it affects their own community. Teachers should also show that they care about each student. This could be as simple as making sure there are pictures or books in the classroom that reflect the diverse cultures and backgrounds of all students.
Helping Students Handle Stress
College can be stressful, and sometimes life outside of college is hard, too. When students are dealing with a lot, they might find it hard to focus on schoolwork. Teachers can help by creating a calm place in the classroom where students can take a break if they need to. It's also good for teachers to talk to students about their lives, listen to their problems, and offer support.
Dealing with work refusal in college is not just about getting students to do their assignments. It's about understanding what's making college hard for them and making changes to help them learn better. By giving students more choices, making grading less scary, connecting lessons to real life, and supporting students' emotional needs, colleges in India can help every student do their best.
