Why do some speeches stick, and others get forgotten?

Why do some speeches stick, and others get forgotten?

Have you ever attended a training session, perhaps years ago, and you can still remember what the trainer said? Do you apply what you learned every year?

In 2014, I was a Sales trainer at Auto Trader. I gave induction training to every salesperson who started at the company. After completing their roughly two-week induction training, they were allowed out in the field to sell. After this, I saw them once a month for an hour-long training session with their peers or coached them on the road.

I would get frustrated when what I'd taught them in induction training was forgotten in a month.

And then I came across the writing of Dr John Medina in his book Brain Rules.

He mentioned that using emotion and allowing the client to experience various highs and lows in your story can create stickiness and access the brain's memory centres.

Since then, I have applied this technique in my training, and I am often stopped by old Auto Trader employees who say that they can still remember my training and use it today.

How can this help you?

As part of my business, I offer a one—to two-day Power of Persuasion program. In this program, I teach you how to create stickiness in your messaging. You can apply this to a presentation to the board of directors, a sales conversation, or work training.

I've seen shy Engineers learn how to tell stories, lecturers become storytellers to better connect with their class, and Computer Engineers win tenders because they knew the art of storytelling.

Storytelling connects you with your audience, allows them to see the value of your work, and, most importantly, doesn't sound like a sales pitch.

Do you want to learn how to tell better stories?

You can book me in-house for your company and coaching sessions for you and your team.

I'm excited to offer the Power of Persuasion Presentation Bootcamp (as part of a Women in Leadership program) as Day 3 in Dubai on 26 February 2025.

Fantastic article, Yoke! Storytelling is truly impactful, as it forges connections and delves into the core of our human experience. We are, first and foremost, humans, with our roles as engineers, doctors, presidents, etc, coming second.

awesome article
