Why Do Some People Have Adventurous Souls?

Why Do Some People Have Adventurous Souls?

I was curious as to what makes me tick and long for a sense of adventure.? What is it that I am searching for that makes me crave the unknown?? I believe that a sense of adventure varies from person to person and can be influenced by a combination of innate traits, experiences, upbringing, and personal preferences. Here are some factors that can contribute to why some people have a strong sense of adventure:

1. Personality Traits: Certain personality traits, such as openness to experience and extraversion, are often associated with a higher sense of adventure. People who are more open-minded and willing to try new things tend to seek out novel experiences and take risks.? Are you open to new experiences?

2. Curiosity: Curiosity is a strong driving force for adventure. People who have a natural curiosity about the world around them are more likely to explore and seek out new experiences.? I have a strong sense of curiosity.? I feel that I perhaps see things when out on an adventure that others don’t see.? There is magic all around us if we just take a minute to open our eyes and remove the blinkers.

3. Upbringing and Environment: The way a person is raised and the environment they grow up in can play a significant role in shaping their sense of adventure. If a person is exposed to diverse experiences, cultures, and opportunities from a young age, they may develop a stronger desire for adventure.? Growing up, we never went abroad or on luxurious holidays in the sun.? Instead, we found wonder in places like Wales or Cornwall.? My parents enjoyed camping and walking, taking steam train rides and crabbing on the seafront.? We spent hours looking for treasures in the rock pools and climbed mountains.? I remember my brother and I being shoved in between two large boulders by my dad and grandad whilst we got caught in a thunderstorm in the Peak District and it was so exciting!? We couldn’t stand up as the wind was so bad, but I remember being thrilled at the adventure of it all.? I have many childhood memories that involve adventure and my upbringing has 100% contributed to the way I live my life nowadays.

4. Previous Experiences: Positive past experiences with adventure and exploration can reinforce a person’s desire for more. Successful and enjoyable adventures can create a sense of accomplishment and excitement that motivates individuals to seek out similar experiences.? I only ever recall one bad experience (Kinder Scout on a cold January!), but even that adventure has left me with a good story to tell!

5. Desire for Novelty: Some individuals are naturally drawn to novelty and change. They may become easily bored with routine and feel a strong urge to break away from the ordinary in search of new and stimulating experiences.? I smile to myself as I write this one, especially the words “easily bored”.

6. Risk Tolerance: A high tolerance for risk and uncertainty can contribute to a sense of adventure. People who are comfortable with the idea of taking calculated risks are more likely to engage in adventurous activities. Are you a risk taker?? I remember my first Camino with Rachel (who was only 13 at the time) and Julie.? We had only booked our first night’s accommodation and the rest of the trip we would see where the road takes us.? For some, the idea of not having anywhere planned to stay the night would fill them with horror, or feel that it was totally irresponsible to take a youngster on a trip with no accommodation booked.? I don’t see it that way.? There were many hostels, B&B’s and hotels along the way and I had money in the bank.? In my opinion, the risk was quite low and it paid the way for a great adventure that changed our lives.

7. Escaping Comfort Zones: For some, the thrill of adventure comes from pushing personal boundaries and stepping out of their comfort zones. This can lead to personal growth and a heightened sense of accomplishment.? My worry is that with each accomplishment the circle of your comfort zone gets bigger.? I am often asked by people “What’s next?” .

8. Physical and Mental Health: Physical and mental well-being can impact a person’s willingness to engage in adventurous activities. A person who is in good physical shape and has a positive mindset may be more inclined to try new things.

9. Cultural and Social Influences: Cultural norms and societal values can influence whether or not someone embraces adventure. In cultures that emphasize exploration, risk-taking, and discovery, individuals may be more likely to develop a strong sense of adventure.

10. Personal Goals and Values: Individuals who prioritize personal growth, learning, and new experiences as important values are more likely to have a strong sense of adventure.

It’s important to note that a sense of adventure exists on a spectrum, and not everyone will have the same level of inclination towards adventurous activities. People are complex and unique, so their motivations for seeking adventure can vary widely.

Gosh! This is like reading about my life.. thank you for sharing Julia Doherty. I remember when I was young telling my Father that I was bored (like it was his fault) & he replied ‘whose fault is that?’ So if I ever feel bored, I find something to do or explore somewhere new.
