Why do so many of us avoid consistent self-work?

For many of us, consistent self-work isn’t always seen as a priority…
When life feels “okay,” it’s easy to settle there, thinking we’ve done enough.
We make some progress, feel a bit stronger, a bit more in control, and think, “I’ve got this.”
But self-work, like any meaningful work, isn’t a one-time fix.
I see this play out with clients who make great strides, only to stop doing the work once we’re no longer working together.
Then, when that accountability is gone, the momentum slips, and the true value of consistent self-work becomes clear.
We’re all works in progress, and real change requires commitment over time, especially when things feel stable.

When it comes to achieving any goal—whether that’s building a business, working out, or working on yourself—there are three core factors at play: ????????????????????, ????????????????????, ?????? ??????????????????????.
???????????????????? gets us started. It’s the spark that pushes us to take action in the first place, imagining a better version of ourselves. But relying on motivation alone is risky because it naturally fades over time.
???????????????????? kicks in when that motivation wanes. Discipline keeps us going even when things feel tough or routine, helping us stick to the commitments we’ve made to ourselves. But if we settle for “good enough” too soon, that discipline fades, and we risk sliding back.
?????????????????????? is what brings the real, lasting results. Just as you wouldn’t go to the gym for three weeks and expect peak fitness, you won’t see internal transformation if you work on yourself sporadically. This work has to be consistent, maintained even when life feels stable.

When things are going well, it’s easy to assume we’ve done enough.
But without ongoing focus and accountability, people often find themselves slipping back, unable to sustain the progress they once felt.

Just as I was writing this, I got a call from a long-term client.

We hadn’t worked together in a few months, and he was struggling.
After a quick chat, we identified the issue and got him back on track.
It was a reminder of how essential accountability and support are to keep people focused and moving forward.
I know from experience that all too often, someone will gain confidence, improve self-awareness, and feel more in control.
Then, they’ll assume they no longer need the support that got them there.
But without ongoing accountability and focus, it’s easy to lose sight of the work that built that confidence in the first place.
I did this myself when I stopped working with my own coach; I quickly realised that the accountability and structure were essential to maintaining the progress I had worked so hard to achieve.
