Why Do People Do Something?(2 of 3)

#SunilFridayThought #Friday Thought 82

This is the second artcile in the series of three articles. If you have not read the the first part, you may want to read it here

In the previous article we saw that even when there is no reason to do anything from Financial perspective, people will end up doing something rather than 'nothing'. And that 'something' is more likely than not, would involve people and is likely to be in open space outside home.

Could convenience or ease of doing something affect a long-term innate social nature that has been shaped over thousands of years? Let's see a completely different example.

The picture herein shows the comparison of watching a game in the stadium and at home. (Everything else remaining the same).

Comparison on the most parameters show that watching a game on a TV at home is significantly better. And yet almost everyone that has watched a live game in a stadium prefers that experience over watching a game on a TV. For most folks, budgetary constraints prevent enjoying such live experience rather than willingness.

Listening to national anthems being played in the stadium is never the same as experiencing it on a high-definition TV with top-of-the-class sound systems. What could be possible reasons? When the Greek philosopher Socrates said that the man was a social animal it meant more that just a casual observation. The answer to our question lies in the psychological and sociological factors that have affected human evolution for thousands of years. And if those are the driving forces, can hundred percent #WFH be an acceptable permanent solution for everyone?

The history shows that the #pandemic in 1918 that lasted for four years failed to make any significant change in human behaviour. To assume that the current pandemic that is much less scary would cause fundamental changes in human behaviour is too presumptuous.

In any case, this whole argument about whether #WFH would become a 'new normal' post Covid19 may be much ado about nothing, at least in the Indian concept. We will explore that further in the third part.
