The IT industry has grown rapidly in the 21st Century. With the innovation, technology, and development happening every day, the curiosity of the new generation towards this sector is also increasing day by day.
There is a saying that goes “Good?companies?manage Engineering. Great?companies?manage?Product.”
“At the end of the day, your job isn’t to get the requirements right your job is to change the world.”
The work culture and environment of product-based companies are very healthy for their employee. There are?flexible work time?and no restrictions on the working hours.
The company can provide many spots where employees can feel better to work, also provide indoor games to boost your mind. There is a great life balance in both professional and personal life.
Getting into product-based companies could be comparatively more difficult than getting into service-based companies. While hiring candidates, service-based companies generally take rounds which include aptitude, basic coding, and interview.
Whereas product-based companies generally take rounds which include online coding assessment, behavioral and technical interviews, clearing these rounds is not as easy as competing for coding and interview rounds of service-based companies. They are more focused on problem-solving skills. But, as long as you remain consistent with your efforts, it’s not that tough to make a shift. Many employees had made a switch to product-based companies in less than one or two years.
Although, being a worker of a service-based company, you might be at a bit of a disadvantage as most recruiters from product-based companies search for candidates who are already working in some product-based company. But if you know the right way to grab the eyes of recruiters, then it will be only a matter of execution. If you have friends in product-based companies who can refer you or have a stunning LinkedIn profile that can influence seniors, it will make the process a lot easier.
And here's why people end up in service based company
A large chunk of students graduate every year. Question them on their career plans, and some common answers anyone can expect to hear from most of them are “I want to get placed in a reputed IT firm”, “I want to join an MNC”, “ I just want a job in some software company!” . “IT firm, all right, but do you want to join a service based company or a product based company?” This question mostly draws blank stares or responses like “What difference is it going to make?”, “I don’t really care, as long as the pay is good”, “Whatever, I will just choose the company that is faring better.”
Now , I am not judging any of your responses, but Graduates, listen up, it does make a difference! Many people end up saying all this because they don’t know much about product based companies, and most importantly, don’t know how different it is from service based companies. Here are five main reasons why you should seriously consider joining a product based company:

1:You get to learn and be creative at work.
2:?Work with purpose.
3:You get ownership to work.
4:You get opportunity to grow.
5:Intrinsic motivation.
Product based companies are great places for career growth. I don’t think anything can give one more pride than watching one’s work getting implemented, one’s ideas being materialized, across a number of platforms. And that feeling of belonging and sense of accomplishment, of being a part of the product development, is truly empowering.
A lot of people have started realizing the importance and impact of product based companies, which is evident from the attrition rates of service based companies,?or if one just?picks up the newspapers for tech news! Ignorance should never rule when you are making a career choice. Always know where you are going, at least the path, if not the destination. A lot of people just end up following the crowd and being lost with the crowd, until one day they?look back and realize they haven't accomplished what they could have.
Think before you take a step.

2 年That's a great piece you have written. I totally rhyme with your thought because I myself come from a service background. What drives me to aim for product based companies is the impact that I can have by building products that can have potential to change the way we live. Even if it is a 1% change.
