Why do people feel enough is enough?

Why do people feel enough is enough?

It is quite easy and dangerous to pigeon hole entire sections of the community and brand them as 'far right' or 'far left', however, to stifle free speech is even more dangerous. Our democratic right is to allow free speech, otherwise we are life imitating art, namely George Orwells thought police!

What has driven the recent civil unrest in the UK? We all know someone who says things like 'this country is going to sh!t' and 'back in my day, things were better' and I like many have previously dismissed it as people viewing their past through rose tinted glasses. Although now I find myself saying the same thing, but why? Am I becoming an old cantankerous fart as I head towards the big 50? I don't think so.

Regardless of where you were born, what school you went to, what you do for a living, your sexual orientation or your general political persuasion. Three main things drive your feeling of contentment, these are simply depicted as the first three blocks in the in the very well known Maslow's hierarchy of needs. If people start to feel unsafe and lose hope, they become scared and angry, that manifests itself in the scenes we've seen on UK streets and the social media posts over the past month or so. There are lots of phycology studies that support that and the automatic and natural reaction is to find someone to blame and lash out verbally or physically.

Feeling safe and having hope in the ability to attain a better future for yourself and your children is what gets most people out of bed. Milestones like buying your own home, starting your own business, sending your children to a school that gives them a great education etc etc. It is simple phycology and I believe that many people in the UK are being forced back down the hierarchy of needs.

What do I mean by that?

Economy

The UK economy has been bumbling along for the past twenty or so years, getting nowhere fast. YOUR ability to earn is closely linked to overall performance of the economy in which you reside, it is really very simple. The GDP per capita of the UK compared to the equivalent US state tells us a lot of how relatively poorer we've become as a nation. The table below illustrates where the UK ranked vs the closest US state at that time, so it is like for like. What it shows is; Twenty years ago, the UK economy was equal to the 7th most affluent state (Minnesota) in the US. Ten years ago the UK was equal to the 30th most affluent state (Indiana) and then today we rank equal to the worst state in the US (Mississippi). To put that into context the UK economy needs to grow by 46.47% to get back to where we were in 2004! The 7th most affluent state in the US today is Alaska with $94,387 per capita.

I've included the Non British population in the table to challenge the rhetoric we are fed by the mainstream media and politicians that immigration is good for our economy. It quite clearly isn't good for our economy on the evidence above. Although its not down to the immigration volume. The reasons why our economy is failing is down to a switch from a free enterprising economy of the 80's and 90's to more of a globalist economy over the past 15 or so years where only huge corporates seem to be able to thrive. Starting and running a small business now is far harder than it was back in the 90's and lots of stats to evidence that.

Crime

Crime and particularly violent crime (Murder, Assault and Rape) since 2014 in most major cities has tripled. So, your feeling of being safe unless you are completely oblivious is quite rightly challenged. If you live in one of the UK's major cities you are three times more likely to be the victim of violent crime than you were in 2014.

Birmingham UK, Violent crime incidents by month January 2011 to May 2024

This is not normal or to be expected! The worst city in the US is Detroit. London, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and a few more are all worse when you look at incidents per 1000 of the population. YES that is right, 7 of the UK's cities are worse than the worse city in the US. The only thing they are worse on is gun crime but most of our cities more than make up for that in knife crime.

Social

This is a bit more subjective although if you look at the forecast of the population demographics. Lord Green of Deddington bravely stood up in the house of lords recently and delivered a speech that spelt it out. By 2040, the people born in the UK under the age of 40 will be outnumbered on a ratio of 60:40 to those born outside the UK. An overall population of c80m people. Can you imagine how much strain that will put on our infrastructure and how much it will cost to buy your own home, it will be completely unobtainable. The people immigrating to the UK will NOT live as 80% of the population does today, so how are you going to feel part of the social makeup of the population? See Maslows third level in the pyramid.

Before you pass that off as racist twaddle, the UN definition of genocide is as follows; An act committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national ethic, racial or religious group as such deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part. So this government and past governments by not getting control of our borders are in fact knowingly taking part in the genocide of our indigenous population.

So I share the concerns voiced by millions of people in the country. If that means I am far right, then so be it!

Steve, I commend you for sharing your well constructed and objectively backed opinion. There are many opinions abound as to what’s right, what’s wrong, what went wrong, when it went wrong, who’s fault is it. A debate which can never be resolved as there will be equally as compelling arguments to the contrary and backed by credible objective data. But if there were no opinions and no debate it would be boring!
