Why do people believe in organizations? Patagonia has all of us leaning in.

You may recognize his face, or you may recognize his name. And if you haven’t in the past, you do now.

Yvon Chouinard has been featured in all social media and news outlets since the announcement of Patagonia’s transfer of ownership.

His decision was shaped around the purpose and mission to fight climate change. While other companies boast about their profits, he’s making all of us focus on his message to protect this planet.

Pause for self-reflection on how you are helping protect our planet…

When Yvon’s letter published, I personally connected on it because of my values and fulfillment. I had a natural reflection on what my family and I do to help do our part, but what we could do better. Then I had a sense of joy to see a successful organization make such a positive impact. ?

It’s setting organizations up to walk the walk when it comes to their values. Believe me, this is important…

Perceptyx reported employees disengaged or not connected to company value’s were “44 times less likely to recommend…”. A staggering number that leaves people to self-reflect on the word, purpose.

In a previous article I shared the difference between when an employee is fulfilled vs. engaged.

Buckle in, because we’re going deeper in the meaning of purpose and why we drive it at SC Johnson.

“(People) want to work with companies that enjoy building connections and thriving communities,” writes Jamie Green, “They also want to feel a higher sense of purpose and to know how their work contributes to society.”

Patagonia made their purpose and mission very clear. Doing what’s right to protect our planet. It’s not about getting recognition or flashy awards – it’s putting purpose into action.

Here at SC Johnson, we are built around This We Believe and it’s our sounding board for doing right by employees, consumers, the public, our communities, and the world at large.

So, how do we drive values and how do we attract top talent in today’s market?

We align our purpose to talent values.

This We Believe is integral part of our business plans, talent learning and development and long-term strategy plans. It’s connecting us back to making the right decisions.

For most, you may already know we are a privately held company for 5 generations (only independent global consumer products company).

But did you know how our values tie to action?

A Healthier World:

  • We don’t have to “report” to Wall Street. We can invest in long-term health of the business and doing what is right to create a better world.
  • ?Mosquito Education and End to Malaria - Every year, thousands of volunteers in the malaria belt count and catch mosquitos that land on them. Our CEO participated as “human bait” in a research study in Rwanda. This research is incredibly important to help monitor the efficacy of efforts to eradicate malaria. We are proud to in support this research and work to help protect families from this terrible disease.

A More Sustainable World:

  • Our partnership with Plastic Bank generated the creation of over 379 collection centers across Indonesia, the Philippines and Brazil since 2018.
  • We’ve stopped more than 20 million kilograms of plastic, the equivalent of 1 billion plastic bottles, from disrupting ocean ecosystems.
  • Taking it a step further we launched 100% recycled ocean-bound plastic bottles in two of SC Johnson’s home cleaning brands: Windex? in North America and Mr. Muscle? in the U.K. and Ireland.?This partnership has provided more than 22,000 people with additional income.

A World With More Opportunity:

  • Our commitments to diversity and inclusion celebrate people from every culture, ethnicity, race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, age and ability, and organizations take notice.?
  • 50% of our SC Johnson Board of Directors is a representative of women or minorities. While we are private and don’t require a Board of Directors, we do it because it provides experience and diverse insights.
  • We’ve invested in female entrepreneurs including the founders of SC Johnson brands Mrs. Meyer’s, Oars and Alps and Stasher
  • In additional, we’ve long been committed to future generations and finding ways to help them reach their goals:
  • United Negro College Fund: For more than 5 decades we’ve supported the United Negro College Fund through funding of scholarships to minority group members.
  • SC Johnson STEM Scholars Pathway:?We’ve donated over $5.5 million to Gateway Technical College to create the SC Johnson STEM Scholar Pathway program.?
  • Save the Children:?We sponsored 11-city bus tour across America. The?100 Days of Reading?campaign provided backpacks with school supplies, educational materials, and personal care products – including?Babyganics?hand sanitizer and sunscreen to local students and families in need. The tour featured serval cities that are home to SCJ facilities (Charlotte, NC, Stanley, NC, Bay City, MI, Racine, WI, Chicago, IL)

A More Transparent World

  • Every ingredient in every SC Johnson product goes through our detailed Greenlist evaluation process to determine potential impact on human health and environment.
  • As being transparent, we share our product ingredient lists so you can make the most informed choices for your home.
  • Through our efforts, we’ve been recognized for not only our research behind our ingredients and transparency, but how we connect our products to the human experience.

“We measure our success not by the financial report of the next quarter, but by the world we leave for the next generation.” – Fisk Johnson, Chairman & CEO

With a little one at home, this statement makes a big imprint. Not only do I want to make a positive impact for the hope and success for my son, but I also want to work for a company that promises to protect him and many others across the globe.
