Understanding technology has become increasingly crucial for non-tech co-founders in today’s startup landscape. While it’s commonly believed that a CEO from a non-tech background might not need extensive technical knowledge, the reality often tells a different story.
I know you guys might suggest hiring a CTO would be the best solution for any startup. Well, that's not the exact solution to the problem.
In today's blog, we will discuss how a technically sound CEO can make a better product.
The tech industry’s rapid evolution and integration into every facet of business demand a certain level of tech literacy from leaders, especially those steering startups.
The Evolution of Business and Technology:
If founders are not technically sound then this leads to lots of micro-management. By technically sound I don't mean being able to code. But the least basic knowledge of the time that's required while developing stuff.
For example, a founder started building a tool around chatbots. It is important for people to understand the difference between the backend and front end of a chatbot. What is a cloud service, and how is a chatbot trained on existing data etc.
We understand that it's difficult for non-tech CEOs to begin with their software product. So at Surge Startup, we make it easy for non-tech cofounders by building their software products. In the digital age, technology isn’t merely a support function but an integral part of a company’s success. It shapes products, services, operations, and customer experiences. Startups, especially, rely on tech innovations to disrupt markets and scale rapidly.
Although coding skills aren't necessary, a basic understanding of technology is important. Let's say for example that you are building an SEO tool, so the CEO should understand the basics of how SEO works, the tech aspect of the business.
A CEO’s understanding of technology doesn’t need to delve into coding specifics but should encompass a fundamental grasp of how technology drives innovation, shapes strategy, and impacts the business landscape.
Strategic Decision-Making:
Tech decisions often form the backbone of a startup’s growth trajectory. From choosing the right tech stack to determining the scalability of a product or service, these decisions significantly impact the company’s competitiveness and bottom line.
A few years ago, my friend added a Chrome extension to his product, which helped him gain more traffic and drive more sales. It was a smart technical and strategic decision.

A non-tech CEO equipped with an understanding of tech can contribute more effectively to strategic discussions, ask informed questions, and make decisions aligned with the company’s goals.
Effective Communication with Tech Teams:
I was recently working with a client. The CEO made sure that the technical team was able to convert his non-technical requirements to technical sprints. The team knew what they wanted to achieve. Now that's called efficient communication.
Clear communication between non-tech CEOs and tech teams is pivotal. A CEO’s tech literacy facilitates effective communication by bridging the gap between the technical and business realms. It helps in setting realistic expectations, understanding challenges, and fostering collaboration, leading to more efficient workflows and problem-solving.
Informed Resource Allocation:
Understanding technology aids in resource allocation. With a grasp of tech essentials, a CEO can better evaluate the need for tech investments, anticipate future needs, and allocate resources accordingly. This knowledge helps prevent oversights and ensures that tech investments align with the company’s growth plans.
If the CEO has basic knowledge of programming, APIs, and cloud services, they gain a competitive advantage in business.
Mitigating Risks:
In the absence of tech understanding, CEOs might unknowingly expose the company to risks. From cybersecurity threats to overlooking essential compliance measures, tech-related risks can significantly impact a startup’s stability. An informed CEO can guide the company in navigating these risks, ensuring robust security measures and compliance with industry standards.
The evolving business landscape necessitates non-tech CEOs to grasp the fundamentals of technology. While not obligatory to be a tech expert, an understanding of technology empowers CEOs to make informed decisions, communicate effectively, mitigate risks, and foster a culture conducive to innovation and growth.
Collaborating with proficient tech teams remains crucial, but a CEO’s tech literacy enhances their ability to lead the company successfully through the ever-evolving tech landscape.

10 个月Interesting perspective! I believe having some level of understanding of technology is beneficial for non-tech co-founders. It allows them to communicate effectively with the tech team and make informed decisions. However, I also think surrounding yourself with a strong tech team is equally important. Business success is often a result of a well-balanced and collaborative team. Thank you for sharing your insights!
