Why do millions of people still live without clean water?

The world has made significant progress in increasing people’s access to clean water.

Since 2000, more than 2.3 billion people have gained clean water close to home. Here at WaterAid, we have directly reached 28.5 million people with this essential since we were founded in 1981.

Yet the world continues to battle a water crisis, despite decades of work and global commitments to deliver clean water and sanitation to all by 2030.

Today, 703 million people don’t have clean water close to home. That's almost one in ten of us.

This World Water Day, we explore why more progress hasn't been made and what needs to be done to end the water, sanitation and hygiene crisis for good.

We believe that with a global effort, everyone, everywhere can have access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene within a generation.?

The critical role of aid in financing water, sanitation and hygiene

Investing in clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene has powerful impacts. It improves health outcomes, strengthens economic development and builds people's resilience to climate change. Yet funding for WASH aid is declining at an alarming rate. We call on donors to take action in our report.

If you're referring to Africa, and specifically South Africa, then people in the know (no doubt WaterAid are) are ruined by mismanagement, fraud and corruption. Of offered to join WaterAid due to my knowledge of certain African countries and needs, all related to water and specifically sustainable irrigation for sustainable food crops. Alas, I hear nothing back from your HR. I wonder why !
