Why do I Write?

Recently, a beloved mentor asked me a rather thought-provoking question during one of our heart-to-heart conversations, “Why do you write so much, and that too on a social media platform like LinkedIn? What is your driving force behind it?”?

I'm not ashamed to admit that I didn't have a clear-cut answer at the time. But seeing that I was completely deluded as to the intention and purpose behind it, I began retracing my steps back in time to dig out the seeds of my current flair for writing. And, even though it led me further down the rabbit hole than I intended, I believe I have found at least a few good and honest explanations for it.?

  1. I've pretty much lived a lonely life right from childhood through adulthood, and somehow my inability to sustain and maintain friendships(probably due to my quiet demeanor) turned into a voracious appetite for reading and writing. I used to find comfort in books, and I still do.?
  2. A moment’s depth of clarity in perception is often enough to pave the way for an insightful life. And, when I write, I'm able to access deeper segments of my imagination, thereby instigating a perpetual cycle of thought and action.?
  3. Writing is an amazing way to let our presence and stature become all the more impactful and meaningful. When a farmer sows seeds, he is unsure of the potential within the seeds. But by going out on a limb and being hopeful, he is letting nature reap the bounty. There is no greater satisfaction than seeing the seeds of our labor bearing fruits in others’ hearts.?
  4. More importantly, there is ever-expansive freedom in letting our ideas and thoughts freely float out into the universe, loaded with the prospect of goodness.

And as Ruskin Bond once said, “I’m like a shopkeeper hoarding bags full of grains, only I hoard words. There are still people who buy words and I hope I can keep bringing a little sunshine and pleasure into their lives to the end of my days.”
