Why do I exist?

Today I enjoyed a brilliant workshop/webinar with Amanda Watts from Oompf Global on how accountants, CPAs, and bookkeepers can attract A-Grade talent.
The homework was to write an article about why you exist because your ideal employees will be drawn to that, which got me thinking:
So, here goes…
My ‘why’ is fundamentally about how numbers can be used to make the world a better place – hence why accountants, CPAs, and bookkeepers are a key element of my vision.
I believe we have so much potential to influence how our clients think, and it’s better thinking that leads to better action and better results for us all; a better life for the business owner and their family, better jobs for employees, better customer experiences, and a better society through charitable efforts, sustainability initiatives and contributing tax.

How can accountants, CPAs, and bookkeepers get their clients thinking better? By using their skills with numbers. For one thing, we can show clients how small changes in their key business drivers can have a massive impact on their business results.
But accountants can also introduce new ideas, perspectives, and mindsets to clients. A great example is a concept of working On your business not just In it. Michael Gerber coined this phrase in his book The E-Myth. If you have not read the book, the ‘myth’ is that technicians, not entrepreneurs, start businesses because they can do the work of the business (a plumber starts a plumbing business, an accountant starts an accounting firm, and so on). As a result, they get stuck working IN the business, rather than working ON the business. The problem this creates is their life can be overtaken by the business and the dream becomes a nightmare. Without this perspective, a business owner can give up or never grow their business to what it could be - a huge waste of potential.
Another example is the book Traction by Gino Wickman, which outlines a turnkey business leadership and management system (based on numbers) that most small businesses lack, as a result, a business hits a ceiling and the owner becomes frustrated, even exhausted - again, a huge waste of energy and potential.
As well as helping clients envisage a better future, accountants can help make that a reality with a range of supporting services from management accounts right through to business coaching and helping clients prepare for exit, rolling in ideas, perpectives, and mindset shifts.
Meetings are a great way to use our skills with numbers and share knowledge with clients and create those all-important breakthroughs in thinking. And this is why I sold my practice to build software – software like Agendali designed specifically with accountants in mind, to help them get more out of their meetings.
That’s why I do what I do. If you’re interested in making the world a better place one meeting at a time, register for Agendali.com.
