Why do I bother?
Freelancing is a tough gig. Some weeks are full of variety, plenty of commissions and interesting people to talk to. Some weeks are, frankly, dull, dull, dull.?
Either option is better than weeks of nothing at all.
This past year, I freely admit, has been tough. The bouts of activity have been there, but they’ve been brief. I’ve had some fantastic commissions to work on, but they’ve been few and far between. I’ve sent out spec letters and applied for loads of work, and heard nothing.
So why do I bother?
The answer is simple. I enjoy it.
I enjoy helping clients find their voice.
I enjoy supporting clear and meaningful communication.
I enjoy wrestling with complex subjects and making them understandable.
I enjoy playing with language, reaching new audiences, learning new tricks.
I’m also really good at it.
(If any clients want to jump in right now and verify that claim, that might be nice. Just saying.)
The size of the business or the commission doesn’t matter. What matters is that you believe communication is important. That you want to connect with your audiences. That you understand how your written content impacts the way you’re seen in the world.
Oh, and that you hire a really great copywriter (ahem ahem) to help you find and use your voice.
